Best Item at the End of the Game
0
One of the most annoying things that happens in games is the 100% bonus item. To get the item, you'll need to have done everything in the game. Once you get the item, it's awesome, because it's so badass, but you don't get a chance to really use it because everything's already been done in the game.
It seems like games don't do this often, thankfully, but let's talk about the games that do.
Ultimate Spider-Man
There are a couple of different costumes in this game, to change things up, but they all suck. Except for one - the black costume, which has been loved by many for years. It's the only alternate outfit worth having in this game. However, you can only get it after collecting all the tokens, winning all the races, doing everything. So, once you have the costume, you can . . . web around the city? There's nothing left to accomplish. No more challenge. Great costume and no way to enjoy it.
NOTE: Yeah, chances are, you could use a cheat code to get the fantastic item and thus enjoy it throughout the entire game, but you could probably also use a cheat code to become invincible and not have any challenge at all, so let's not talk about cheat codes here. Just playing fair and square.

One awesome bonus item I remember is the black F1 car at the end of Gran Turismo 4. That thing accelerated so fast and took the turns so well it wasn't even funny. But that is something you can use.
GUN, on the other hand.... gives you a grenade launcher. What can you do with it? Well, you can shoot the mountainside, and uhh..... shoot... buildings?

I believe GTA 4 and San Andreas give you some good shit outside of your residence awaiting to be collected or driven.

Final Fantasy 12.
Kill every optional boss in the game to obtain a sword that's so awesome that you'll... two-shot the only thing that's left, the final bossfight before the credits which you could have theoretically already beaten 100 hours of playtime earlier because it's nowhere near the difficulty of those optional fights.

Does Mewtwo count as an item?Kind of, but you could use Mewtwo after you got it. As long as you had friends to play with. If, like me, you didn't have anyone nearby with a Gameboy and a Pokemon game, then Mewtwo sat in your game, never used.

It seems like nearly every fucking RPG does this, and it drives me mad. I think I could get to the end of Final Fantasy 7 and beat Sephiroth's final form in less than sixty hours, no problem, but it'd take me another 60 hours, and a lot of luck, to maybe beat Emerald Weapon. At least in FF7, you don't have to beat the extra Weapons to get anything spectacular, but it is crazy how the final boss will be completely overshadowed by optional bosses.

The PS2 version of Resident Evil 4
Feels so good to be owning the zombies with infinite ammo railgun thing... ah forgot the name.

The Hand Cannon in RE4 by the time you can actually buy it you would have to be able to have S cleared all the Mercenaries missions any by that time you will have officially played RE4 long enough to know how to effectively take down even the most menacing of enemies with laser precision pistol shots.

Oh yes, the P.R.L. 412 (I think).
It could literally kill Las Plagas form bosses in 2 seconds. Not bring them to a weaker form... kill.

I think in Resident Evil 4, the infinite ammo weapon was the Chicago Typewriter, with is nothing but a superpowerful Thompson gun that the mafia used.
As for me, getting the white gems in Crash Bandicoot series for Playstation. You had to get every fucking box in each level, including the bonus levels, which made it hard at times.

This is one topic me and my casual gamer friends debate about all the time. While many of these ultimate items would have been useful for defeating said boss, or there is nothing left to do after you get the item, my opinion is that they are there as something similar to a trophy of sorts. Because if you really think about it, would you have really done all that if you get nothing from it? I'm sure if those challenges gave you nothing, not that many players would even bother doing them.
As for why optional bosses are harder then the last bosses in RPGs, it's probably so that more casual gamers can beat the boss (they make them challenging, but not so much that it makes them rake their brain on how to beat it), and the optional ones to really make the player think of a solid strategy to beat it (or make them grind for levels for hours). Although pointless once you get them, they are fun to use whenever you want to replay the game (that is if it has some kind of NEW GAME+ feature).

Yeah I really hate the trend to do this. They might as well give you a completely useless but awesome looking item since you'll never have any reason to use it.

That kinda reminds me of when they gave me the stealth cameo at the end of Metal Gear Solid 2. I really had no intention of replaying metal gear solid 2, but I wanted to try out the stealth cameo.
Somehow I ended up replaying the entire game with the stealth cameo. It was actually more fun being invisible and playing pranks on the guards.

They might not be exactly what you're talking about but in Final Fantasy IV (also known as Final Fantasy II for the SNES) in the final dungeon you can fight optional "mini-bosses" in order to get some of the best gear in the game. But both the Ragnarok sword and Holy Lance are both holy attributed, which sounds great as one might expect (almost) all of the enemies in the final dungeon of an RPG to be weak to holy attributed attacks. You would be wrong, dead wrong in this case, as most of the monsters in the final dungeon are resistant to holy, and I can't remember right off hand but there might even be an enemy or two that absorb holy damage... At least the final boss isn't resistant to them... but he's not weak to it either if I remember correctly. The two strongest weapons in the game (not including the Onion Sword in the DS remake, or the extra weapons in the GBA version), are all but useless for the final dungeon.

I completely agree. Even if you were tired of doing pranks, you could use the bandana and just go Rambo on everyone.

In the case of RE4, I just like to put it in my Wii and kill some bad guys to blow off some steam. It's really satisfying to be able to kill just about every enemy in the room in a single shot, or to go around with the infinate ammo Handcannon and just cut loose. Putting Ashely in the suit of armor helps as well (especially on Hard mode); but the coup de grace is the Chicago Typewritter. It will probably take two or three plays on a file just to get, but you get infinate ammo.
Resident Evil 4 & 5 give a new game + feature that lets you take all of that ass-kicking equipment back to level 1 and just blow the baddies away. You can even change the difficulty in 5.
If only Final Fantasy games had New Game+ features (I think only Crisis Core and X-2 do)... That would be one of the few possible improvements to the series that I can think of. In fact, the New Game+ feature could make lots of games better.

Oh there are so many of these to pick from, but as pointed out, often you get something neat only after beating every possible enemy and there is no point. Just gonna list my five favorites.
1. Mercenaries - You get the secret drop crate that has two very special guns. One is the streetsweeper, a very high power machine gun that takes care of infantry in seconds. That one is kinda blah, but the other items rules. An RPG that fires off rounds that have the power of an air strike. It's worth starting a new game with these, allows for a more explosive experience.
2. Metal Gear Solid - Already been mentioned, but that's just because it's good. Save Meryl get the bandana...save Otacon get the stealth camo...play through one more time get that sweet ass Tuxedo. It's worth playing through more than once because every time I try to get a better rating; not exactly that long of a playthrough either, especially if you skip endless conversations.
3. Bayonetta - Beating this game on almost any different difficulty will unlock something useful for the next playthrough, even though you can't get the really good stuff until you beat the nearly impossible crap like the alfheim portals or non-stop infinite climax mode. Thankfully, you can get around that if you have enough halos and know where to spend them. Fun game.
4. Rygar - Not as much useful as it is funny, beating the game on various difficulties will allow you to make your discarmor look like different kinds of food. For some reason that cracked me up, so it made the list yo.
5. Suikoden V - The New Game+ doesn't offer much in the way of new stuff, but it lets you keep nearly all your old stuff. When I first played through this game I didn't get the best ending, so I immediately played it again, and it was delightful, mostly due to one very important addition. I could now hold a button and make my guy run around a lot faster. Who can really top the gift of speed?
