Can you play horror games?
Can you?

I recently bought a bunch of games because this movie rental store is going out of business and they're selling like four games for twenty dollars. So I bought Dead Space because I knew it's really interesting (storywise). I thought I'd be able to tolerate it (the horror) but I really can't. I got about five minutes in and then I got into a series of corridors where the lights were off and I just turned the Xbox 360 off. I wish I could tolerate these scary games because they tend to have the best story.

Oh man horror games are fun though. I haven't played them in years. Started out with
Resident Evil back when it was well like this.
I guess the rule of thumb is if you like horror movies you'll love horror games.

Yes, I can "play", but then at some point it will freak me out, that I'll stop playing.
ex: Fatal frame 3, After I met the Tattooed woman for the first time.
remember guys, Fear is different than surprised and suspense.

I can play them but I don't tend to like them too much. I tried Dead Space but got bored after a few hours because it was too predictable. I like Resident Evil but it doesn't feel like a horror to me. Doom I played when I was like 10 and didn't come across as scary.

I think that's a fallacy...
I LOVE horror movies, but I freak out on most horror games lol.
About the only horror game I ever finished was Condemned: Criminal Origins.
Scary, dawg.

Horror is my favorite genre for either game or movie ..
Say, the ones which are the best for this genre : Silent Hill, Fatal Frame
I enjoy playing it a lot ...
Especially Silent Hill,
Good story makes me forget about how scary it is .. yet, i play it because of curiosity 2 years ago ..
Result : Cannot sleep

For Dead Space, buy the Big Gun Force gun and your set. Blast away anything that comes near you.
I couldnt play the original res games, they were scarier than the res5 and the controls were difficult for me.
Also thought resident evil 4 was scary, stupid moaning... gah.

Yes, i can play the games, but I don't think I am genuinely afraid in horror games. I get surprised when shit happens quickly and I shoot the room a few times only to see it was a can of soda that fell onto the floor, but that's all it is. The only time I can remember where I really didn't want to go further into the level was when the level designers added sounds that if you heard in real life, you'd shit yourself. What scares me is the sounds. The right music/noise at the right time can scare me more than any monster ever could.
Another big factor is darkness. If I can't see my enemy, death is imminent.

Back when the first resident evil came out on psx, i played it alone in a room with the window blacked out so it was pitch dark(except for the tv). i played for about three hours, but then it started to get to me, so i climbed out the window.

I suck at playing horror games, I get scared shitless very time something comes running and screaming towards me in the darkness. Though I think the sounds and the music is the most important factors, if they are well made, you reeeeally dun wanna go into that next room.
I can play them if I'm not playing alone, then it's just fun, but I simply dun think it's funny to be "scared" alone.

If you don't believe me, play the game without music (or your own music for that matter). It feels like playing L4D.

The STALKER series...
1- STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
2- STALKER: Clear Sky
3- STALKER: Call of Pripyat
this is my favorite horror game...heck, they even are my favorite game of all time...of all the three, i love the STALKER: Call of Pripyat
the games make you feel at Chernobyl and Pripyat itself with the creepy sound and the atmosphere...trust me, in the game...when it's night time, you don't want to go outside...you rather staying inside an outpost with other NPCs than going outside alone...many things either mutants, bad stalkers or 'The Zone' itself will try to kill you...it may not be the best horror game compare to others...but it doesn't matter to me...I <3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R games
