Can you play horror games?
Can you?

Well I can play Dead Space now. I decided the music was too scary so I turned it off. I decided that the constant stamping of feet around me was too scary so I turned it off. I decided that the voices were too loud which scared me so I put it to near a whisper. After I did all that the game got a whole lot easier to play through and whenever the lights go off I just run through the room to activate all the baddies and then kill them somewhere brighter. Doubt I'd be able to handle any other horror game though.

I can play horror games, actually started out with the fatal frame series and have been addicted to the horror genre ever since. I particularly like games with stories that are influenced from lovecraftian horror.

I like horror games better than horror movies because its scarier. I remember playing Silent Hill and it scared the shit out of me that I played it in mornings only.

I absolutely LOVE horror games, it's probably my favorite genre. I've lost count as to how many times I've played through the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games.

I find it very strange, I hate horror movies, absolutely hate them, I only liked Tremors, but every time I watch it, I usually get freaked out, thinking a giant worm is going to eat me in my basement apartment.
But when it comes to horror games, I love it, I love play Penumbra, FEAR, Dead Space, Silent Hill series, etc.
I guess when I have the ability to do things my own way, it makes it enjoyable, rather than yelling at the tv, "DON"T SPLIT UP YOU F***ING MORONS!"

Earl Bassett: [faced with a huge number of Graboids] We're gonna need some help!
Grady: Help? Who'd be crazy enough to wanna help us in this mess?
[scene cuts to Burt Gummer]
"Note to self, four pounds of C-4 may be a bit- excessive."

The STALKER series...1- STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
2- STALKER: Clear Sky
3- STALKER: Call of Pripyat
this is my favorite horror game...heck, they even are my favorite game of all time...of all the three, i love the STALKER: Call of Pripyat
the games make you feel at Chernobyl and Pripyat itself with the creepy sound and the atmosphere...trust me, in the game...when it's night time, you don't want to go outside...you rather staying inside an outpost with other NPCs than going outside alone...many things either mutants, bad stalkers or 'The Zone' itself will try to kill you...it may not be the best horror game compare to others...but it doesn't matter to me...I <3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R games
Why did I forget to mention STALKER?
By the way, if you think STALKER isn't atmospheric enough, try looking for its mods at ModDB.

no one has mentioned the Penumbra games? those games are freaking creepy as hell.
and the devs have a reputation of making people crap their pants as well.
as for me, it really varies. i played Doom 3, not sure if that's really that scary... Delta Labs sort of threw me for a new one though. other than that and dead space, i dont really touch on horror games, though i did watch a friend play the Penumbra games.

Can I play horror games? Sure. Do I like them? Not really.
The only "horror" game I finished was F.E.A.R. But that's because it's a pretty fun shooter. Other horror games I played were Silent Hill 3, the older Resident Evils and Dead Space. But honestly, I can't stand survival horrors because I find them too boring. I prefer games with a little more action and those games are just too slow for my liking. Wandering through empty places getting twitchy at every sound just isn't for me.
Can't say that those games don't scare me though. But I can still play through them. The first couple hours of Dead Space was incredibly fun. But then the action grew repetitive and I found myself getting bored.

The real deal about horror games is conflict. (A real man always stand up to a challenge)
Some players take horror games as a humorous one ( like me ). For example is Dead Space. Just a scene at the AG(Anti Gravity area) room and a necromorph jumping like crazy, it feels like it wants a hug from its stance. Try overcoming fear... use it to cower your enemies, that's the secret recipe.

I don´t think thant horror games are scary, i have played all of the F.E.A.R and resident evil games in my room with all light turn off. I even laugh at some parts.

I played most of the Resident Evil games, and finished them. It would be a lie to say i never shivered some times, but that's just a game anyway ^^

I realize now that horror games are just boring once you eliminate the fear aspect. I can't play Dead Space anymore because it's just too boring.

As long as there's an inventory button to frantically mash when things attack me. :p
God, I remember playing System Shock 2 pretty much when it came out...having only played Resi 1, the fact that you could run away, hide in a room and shit would follow you through the door was too much. :P I do love horror, though, but I'm a critic; I sort of naturally appreciate and want to play anything that's well made, even if it does scare me shitless.

What do you mean? If you aren't spending thirty or so minutes extra being cautious because you are preparing yourself for something to pop out of somewhere and just play it like Gears it's really boring. The combat is really simple and the enemies come infrequently and often in small numbers. The game is just really boring without the horror aspect.

I guess the rule of thumb is if you like horror movies you'll love horror games.
not true
I really am not a fan of horror movies. Idk I have seen a few and theirs ones I respect and like but I cannot say I am a fan of the genre by any means
but yet I loooooove survival horror games. The stories are the best, the sound design is top notch, and I love the intensity of knowing this is you.
I never thought I'd like survival horror because I don't like horror films but my ex introduced me to resident evil and I fell in love from there.
I just actually picked up silent hill 2 today and I'm loving it so much so far. I have only played three so far and was so so but two is what I've wanted.
I know I've become a fan girl of the genre because I squeal with delight ( and horror) when I see pyramid head.
