Do you prefer silent character in video games???

hmmm I guess I kind of do. so long as the character was either made by me like a custom character. I don't mind character like the the Persona 3 Mc. mostly becasue he/she can be anybody I want them to be or talk to/become friends with whoamever I choose.

No, I prefer a character where you are able to see his interactions with other characters during the game.

depends on what kind of game it is. If its a game like final fantasy then i prefer talking because if that many people are talking to you and you dont talk back it gets kind of weird.

I prefer characters that only can say Yes and No, ON EVERY CONVO!
on a serious note, I prefer the one that can speak. Just like CJ on San Andreas.

Sorta. I'd like to choose the dialogue options for my character, but I don't want them talking without me choosing a choice of dialogue.

In my opinion, I prefer for them to speak. You actually get to know how the character is supposed to be appreciated even better. Character interactions and the way the character reacts to anything that may happen in the storyline can be appreciated better.

it depends...if the game is heavy on the story then i prefer a character with a bit of personality, but if its a straight shooter or beat em up i could care less.
the one thing i do hate tho is when they have a silent character who has alot of personality looking at them and the way they interact with the world around them but for whatever reason is kept silent a good example of this is the lead role in the FEAR games especially 3 looking at the guy he looks so badass as if he has alot to say and has apparently been through alot but all you get is silence, another example is Bioshock 1 in a game thats so story driven and has such character development why the silent protaganist?
Serge from Chrono Cross is another good example why why in a RPG with such a lush backstory and a character that gets developed and goes through as much as Serge why did he not speak, Chrono didnt speak but who gave a damn Chrono's personality was already established in the first couple of hours and he really didnt personally have any growth or development as a character but Serge on the other hand had his body tooken, betrayed by his best friend and other companions, i would have loved to hear some dialog from our hero on these situations.

It depends. Like Hero from Dragon Quest 8 never talks, but hes Hero and hes awesome. Other characters I would like to talk and interact so they can develop. I guess it just depends on the story, setting, I guess?

Like they said, it all depends.
If it's a well developed, likeable character, it'd be great.
Some characters are meant to be silent.
Usually Nintendo games like Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon.

I like a character in the mix who is silent and either knows what he/she is doing or is very good at what they do (depending on the role of this said character)

Characters that talk are that much more interesting than silent charactersI have to give you a +rep for that. A lack of characterisation of the protagonist in any story heavy video game is a shame really. And I think that problem would be worse if the character is silent.
This applies to eroge and perhaps other video games which feature unvoiced text uttered by the protagonist:
There is the argument that being silent makes me feel more like the protagonist, but it is a bit offensive to portray me as a mute, or expect me to read the dialogue aloud and let my family and neighbours think that I need medical attention.
On a more serious note, no matter how well written the protagonist is, no matter how many commands I issue to the protagonist, he is still not me. He is a character in another world and I would like to know him more. Please give him a voice!

That's exactly what I think. Dead Space 2 was really interesting with Isaac talking instead of being his quiet self like he was in the first game. Made me feel like he had a real purpose in the game instead of being a mindless puppet following orders which is the impression he gave me in the first game.

In my opinion, It mostly depends on the game type and the developers.
From the game type perspective, Some types of games need a strong character role like action adventure games and such. But there are types that does not need that and having a silent character role would be the best choice, For example racing games and RPG.
And from the developers perspective, Some developers could make some great silent characters and others can make great non-silent characters even though both make their games in the same type. For example: Compare Fable and Assassins creed. Both are free roaming RPG games yet one of them is best with a silent character and the other is not.

The only game I can recall playing that had a silent main character in it was the first Jak and Daxter, and I remember in the second game when he talked for the first time everyone thought it was a big deal.

It depends on the game and on the character. I for one though, hate the fact that you are mute in Fable. All you do is make stupid facial expressions. Being shocked because your family was killed in front of you is one thing, but not even a scream of rage while you're charging at them? No. Just no. You don't even make any sound while you have sex.

Sometimes, for example I didn't really like Nomad in Crysis, but I liked Master Chief so...
