DOOM 4

While there's not much info on this game at the moment, I figure I could still just make a topic to discuss what is known so far, and leave the rest up to speculation until something solid comes out.
Anyway, the project for DOOM 4 has been confirmed by John Carmack to have started by around 2008, making the game a little over 3 years in development by now. Carmack also stated that the game will have even better graphics than id Software's recently released RAGE. However, DOOM 4 is also expected to run at 30 FPS rather than the 60 FPS that RAGE runs at. And as a final bit of knowledge, the award winning British horror/fantasy/sci-fi author Graham Joyce (look him up) has been hired to write the storyline for the game, leading me to believe that this may be one of the first id games with a serious story involved that's not just there to give the player an excuse to fire a rocket launcher on Mars.

I hope its comeback is much better then Duke Nukem. One thing i don't want to see is this regenerative health bullshit.

While Rage was a really great FPS game, I was still kinda disappointed in the regenerating health. However, I was quick to overlook that as the gunplay is far better than most other games with a regenerating health system. Plus, they also have healthkits you could carry for emergencies as the health regen isn't exactly something you can rely in firefights or mutant ambush. If Rage is any kind of indication for what DOOM 4 might be like, then I wouldn't worry too much about that.

"At QuakeCon 2011, John Carmack said that "there is really not any news" on Doom 4 and that he wanted to devote this year solely to Rage. He also mentioned that Doom 4 will be using a new scripting language that is based on C++ and called it "super-script". This so called "super-script" is a subset of C++ with features like "scheduling", "full performance" and "type safe". Carmack added that once Rage ships, its development team will move to Doom 4 – to speed up on that project. Doom 4 might also feature dedicated servers unlike Rage.[18] On October 21, 2011, a rumor came into circulation that Doom 4 has been postponed indefinitely because of the disappointing results from Rage. Bethesda has dismissed these claims as false."
So, there's always that. That rumor actually did scare me a little.

I've never heard of that rumor, nor did I think that RAGE did poorly enough to put DOOM 4 into development hell. RAGE was praised for it's tight gameplay and gorgeous graphics. I figure the only reason the sales were on the low end was due to both people not knowing much about the game and thus passing it off as a Fallout/Borderlands knockoff and because that both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 were set to release not too long after Rage did.

edit: Bluh. Got so caught up in that I forgot where I was going. But anyway. I only touched Rage briefly. But from what I got out of it, it had that real distinct id feel to it. It reminded me a lot of Doom 3, actually. I'd almost expect the new installment to play a lot like this. Rage is almost like a teaser.
Dead Space is really popular now. That one hit two million fast. I imagine it's made the kind of monster horror genre a bit more appealing to audiences. Not to mention the wonderful story to it. With all of the monstrosities in Doom, and this new storyline by this author who's an award winner in the genre, people are going to just gobble that shit up. And id knows it. Fuck, I could slam my face into the keyboard in excitement myself.
