Woo, stop playing Black Ops for a few weeks to play a little of Modern Warfare for the first time (Yeah, I'm really late to the party) and somehow using the L96A1 became extremely foreign to me. Getting back into the groove with it now, a bit.
That and I'm starting to fall in love with the PSG1 again, which I liked the first couple of times I used it and threw it in the trash heap to never be used again. The gun does get a bad rap because of its extreme recoil after every shot, it does settle really quickly allowing for quick follow up shots, which in a way makes it more useful than even the Dragunov and WA-2000. The PSG1 is the absolute complete opposite of the L96A1 with the exception of both of them having predictable recoil, yet I love them both. Go figure.
Good ol' sniping. God, I love sniping. I've become addicted to it to the point where I'm starting to shun using other classes in Bad Company 2, which is a really bad habit I should break. *shrugs*

Funny thing is, I love to snipe and I love getting longshots in Black Ops. Though the times I tend to get good scores tend to be with the sub-machine gun AK74u. When I snipe I tend to miss a bunch when enemies run pass (I feel like shit when I let them go) and then someone gets me from behind (either way I feel like shit).
I like using the "Sub-sniper" class I described above (what I named it). It really is hard to snipe when you got no back up.
I tend to use either the PSG1 or the L96A1

as I said before I just prestiged and within 2 days I got up to... Level 30 something XD
the classes I tend to use is:
1:
Primary: M14
Attachments: Grip, Acog.
Camo: Olive
Secondary: STRELA-3
Grenades: Frag, Decoy, Sensor
Perks: 1: Ghost Pro, 2: Warlord (didn't get pro yet) 3: Ninja (didn't get pro yet)
Kill streaks: the ones you start with.
2. Pretty much the same but the primary is
FN-Fal
Attachments: Acog
Perk: Hardened (didn't get pro yet)

I really miss sniping in BC2 TT_TT, sniping people half way across the map, usually with 4 out of 5 shots resulting in a headshot.

I'm not a terribly big fan of using the semi-automatics at range w/ACOG as a pseudo-sniper, with maybe the exception of the M14. Just very few instances where I find it more useful than actually sniping.
That's why I love the Variable Scope attachment so much. The x4 scope is just about right for run-and-gun sniping. Could stand to be a little less magnification, but it is better than the default x6 scope. Plus if I get aggravated for any reason I can be the loser and camp snipe from retarded distances and switch it to the x12 scope.
No, on the rare instances I need something with less magnification, decreased recoil, and good fire rate I tend to turn to the Dragunov w/ACOG even over the M14 with/ACOG. Not really sure why since they both behave very similarly. I think it has something to do with my mindset that I'm using something in the game's Sniper class even if half the time the CoD games mix and match marksman rifles, sniper rifles, and even battle rifles together. Even in MW2 I prefered to use the M21 EBR with ACOG over the FAL w/ Holo even though statistically, the FAL w/Holo was superior to the M21 w/ACOG.

I decided long ago not to use the Variable zoom because it fucks up my sniping. Sometimes when trying to get kills I would press the controller's thumbstick too hard while trying to aim and end up zooming out and missing my shot. Sometimes it makes for awesome looking kills when I get the shot instead of missing but that doesn't happen that often. No I decided instead of trying to snipe on the normal games I would sniper mostly on hardcore... which helps but because I like to hardscope I would usually end up getting 1 kill per death due to people gunning right for me not too long after I find a shooting spot. I am not much of a quickscoper so I don't do that whole close range kills.
I like using the M14 with Grip and Acog because its got good range and I don't tend to waste ammo so thus I don't have to worry about reloading that often. Though I can aim just fine without the scope on it. While it does suck that if I end up trying to run around with it I would end up losing to machine gun, it won't make me feel bad enough to change my ways. I use it doing both normal matches and hardcore.
When I use Fal I usually have a scope on it. Sometimes I would use a silencer on it because it doesn't affect it much and thus makes it a good silent weapon. Though that makes it better for hardcore with its low firing rate. It doesn't has much zoom as the M14 it still rocks at long range. (I tend to get longshot with a good number of kills I get, sniper or not).
while the WA2000 and the Dragunov for running and gunning I don't tend to use them. I only like using semi-auto if they have good attack, and are able to get i-shot kills no matter where I shoot my enemy.
On a side note
I made rank 42 Friday. I might prestige again b( ^ _ ^ )d

I never ran into the issue of accidentally changing my scope because I play on Tactical. I can't stand melee being anything but the "B" button, so as a result I never have to worry about accidentally changing the magnification because I would otherwise never hit the "B" button while ADS-ing.
It isn't that I dislike the M14 or FAL. I just prefer to actually use the PSG1 or L96A1 for both mid range to mid-to-long range sniping. In close-to-mid range combat I often do use the M14 w/Grip and Reflex for accurate shooting at medium range or a FAL w/Suppressor for stealthy, close-to-mid range combat.
I'm not a big fan of automatic weapons. That is probably why World at War is my favorite Call of Duty game despite the fact that I was "late to the party" and didn't get much online play out of it. That said, I can't deny that the Galil w/Suppressor is damn sexy, and I do like to use an M60 w/Extended Mags and Grip for when I'm on defense.

Well I won't be able to play Black Ops till Monday. To be honest my best games where played with the AK74u and the M14. I think I will try using the Dargunov or the WA2000 then.
What kind of map + game type do you think is the best for sniping? Pseudo-sniper or not.
I actually got WAW late as well... though not even a week after getting the game... I had let my friend barrow it and it was fucked up when I got it back. When I tried playing online I couldn't play a good number of the maps... especially the big ones good for sniping.

I've never played any of the objective modes in Black Ops. In fact my online specifications are really lacking because I spend most of my time playing with only one or two friends and, we usually play Combat Training with bots of varying degrees of difficulty, and at that we almost always play Team Deathmatch with bots.
That said, I usually prefer medium sized, wide open maps where you have to be a bit more strategic with cover in order to dodge sniper fire, or for the sniper himself/herself to dodge. Array is probably my favorite map to run-and-gun snipe on. Plus it has the added benefit of that tower at the far northeast part of the map that sometimes I like to camp up on and camp snipe from afar.
I really should get back into actual online play because even with the bots on varying degrees of difficulty they aren't the same as human players. It is just kind of hard because Black Ops is probably the lamest of all of the Call of Duty games, when it comes to online multiplayer anyway.

I tried playing against the ai and had a crap game. Then I tried playing online after that and got more crap games... This all happened yesterday.
I plan on entering prestige again.
I haven't played MW2 in awhile =/
my time has mostly been occupied with Black ops. Mostly because my xbox360 broke and thus I am playing on my dads xbox and he happens to have xbox live

I went back to Modern Warfare 2 for a few days with a friend. I forgot how much more satisfying it is to snipe in that game, and I'm not necessarily referring to quick-scoping, either. Just something about sniping feels more satisfying in that game. I can't really put my finger on it.
Then again none of them hold a candle to how satisfying it felt to run around with a scope-less Mosin-Nagant or Kar98 in World at War, or even camp snipe like a chump with the PTRS-41.

Well I think they should have bigger maps in both games and allow big free-for-all matches.
Sucks that there are virtually no good sniping maps for conventional snipers. Why is it that there is only 4 sniper rifles in the last two games?

I've actually been pretty satisfied with the choices of sniper rifles in the last few games. They seem to follow the normal trend well: those rifles which user less powerful cartridges (e.g. the 7.62x51mm NATO or 7.62x54mmR) tend to only have a one-hit kill radius on the head or neck while consequently having less recoil; while those guns with more stopping power (e.g .338 Lapua Magnum, .408 CheyTac, or 12.7x99mm NATO) tend to have a more pronounced one-hit kill radius but as a result have more substantial recoil.
Which reminds me, I'm assuming the L96A1 uses the .338 Lapua Magnum in Black Ops as opposed the the more common .243 or .308 Winchester rounds since it shares almost identical stopping power as the Intervention or Barrett in MW2.

I hear there will be a new Battle Field coming out. Did you hear anything about snipers that might appear in the game?
I really hope there will be maps set in forests at night (thats my thing lol) like ghost recon or something... the sniping by the way in the game is meh.
