Global/General Sniper Rifle Discussion

I used to enjoy using the Intervention in MW2, good power and relatively easy to use, just slow firing rate since it was bolt action and all. And in Black Ops sniping....well I just can't do it no matter how hard I try.
0
I have been using L96A1 for Black Ops sniping because of the greater chance of getting 1 hit kills.[when you use hardened] And because the semi-auto sniper rifle's recoil is pretty bad... so bad that if you don't take them out with the first shot you might end up missing with the 2nd and 3rd. I also hate how when you look down your scope and it swings then it take a sec to settle and then it does idle sway. Totally prevents fast shooting, even if your not trying to quickscope its still pretty damn annoying.
and let me just say
Infrared Scope is Horrible compared to Thermal Scope
Edit:
did you notice that if you try to go for a body shot you miss entirely at times?

Yup, try to shoot to soon and it does absolutely nothing, seems like you need to lead the target a lot more than in MW2 as well at times. And yeah the new scope is terrible, confusing as hell with the color scheme on it, MIGHT work on Hanoi but who knows.

Honeslty Im actually better at sniping in black ops then i ever was in MW2
everytime i have picked one up ive gone over 2.0 k/d
In MW2 itwas harder for me to be mobile and snipe but not so with black ops
but then again thats just how i play :P

I'm with Kyuubi on this one. I don't know if you have to account for distance more in this game, if so it's awful where if you want a good game with "realistic" sniping play BC2, or if it is just horrible latency issues.
And as for Hannanu's comment, don't be fooled. Chances are that guy is a mediocre sniper who thinks he is hot stuff that he has montages on Youtube. Even I could make a few impressive looking montages if I cared, but no one would say that I'm a good sniper if they saw me in a match.
0
yeah, thats so true. For example if you took some of my best kills, I would look like one of those guys with awesome montages. But I usually get 9 kills for every 10 deaths. Even if I start off great and have my score 15-4 I would usually end up dying a lot right before the games end and have a 15-17 score. Sometimes better sometimes worse. Both in MW2 and in Black Ops
It's easy to find your flaws.(sometimes) Now perfecting yourself to get rid of those flaws is a different story Entirely.
Aside from that.... I wish there were bigger maps, preferably at night and in a forest area. That would actually make it fun to sneak around and use those speacial scopes.
Also be great to have 16 player free-for-all matches.

I don't know. Jungle kind of acts like that and I HATE Jungle with a passion. I especially hate it when I'm trying to run-and-gun snipe, and there is that one great rock face that overlooks the level to "camp" snipe on, but everyone knows it so if the enemy team isn't stupid they'll just grenade you to death.
I'm personally glad the Infrared scope is so unpopular. I hated all of the damn thermal snipers in MW2. It was such a pain because I constantly had to switch back and forth between my two sniper classes (WA2000 + Cold-Blooded and my Intervention + Stopping Power.)
I don't think I would have minded it if there was a night map. It would make more sense and it would mean you'd have to be more cautious running around think the night sky will cover you. Too bad the infrared scope isn't terribly useful on Hanoi.

Well when you think about Hanoi's layout, it's not really effective as a night map. Then again I have actually stayed in a corner for 5 minutes and had a bunch of guys run pass me without a second thought. But my sniper was so damn weak that it didn't kill them when I shot at them. Thing is, even though it said I got a hit. They just kept on running and never came back. Which is odd since most guys come back for you when they know someone is over there. Also, I doubt that using Infrared Scope would have made any difference.
I have played Jungle and didn't do too bad. There are some sniping spots that get some action and most people wouldn't think about checking it. But as far as what I had in mind for a Forest Map it is very lacking. I would prefer something out of Ghost Recon or Bad Company or something.
I never really had a problem in MW2 with guys using Thermal Scope.

Well to be honest it is nothing more than me raging because thermal snipers kill me. It really only became a problem for me on Wasteland. I'd often crouch, or lie prone, in the grass and wait my targets out. However, every few matches there would be that one thermal sniper who would ruin my day by seeing me from over a hundred yards away because I look clear as day on his scope. -_-
Then again, I kind of have to be thankful to them too. If it wasn't for them I probably would have solely relied on my Intervention for kills, which was starting to teach me bad habits in aiming for the stomach region all the time.
Even though I use the L96A1 more than the other sniper rifles in Black Ops, I at least consciously try aiming for the head and upper chest region unless I'm going for a target that is about to leave my sight.

lol yeah when I played Wasteland it would happen to me once and awhile. I would usually snipe while lying on a tank or on top of that one house. Get a bit of surprise kills that way. It's hard for me to re-adjust myself after dying when I come off a streak, solely because by that time they are looking for me. What I hate about myself is that once I start dying I end up making lots of mistakes and end up fucking up my score a lot.
What screws me over is.
When I used bolt-action Snipers I would sometimes miss or get hits and not kills so then I would curse myself for not having a Semi-auto. Or when I play agaisnt a group of guys and get the 1st and 2nd kills but end up dying from either the 3rd or 4th guy.
But then when I used Semi-auto Snipers I would curse myself for not getting the one hit kills, of when I miss and end up wasting bullets trying to get the guy (due to panicking). I would also curse myself for using up bullets.
A bad habit of mine would be that I always go for the body shots. Since its hard to get moving targets let alone headshots. Due to me being untrained and unskilled. Since majority of my practice time was playing agaisnt weaker opponets or stronger ones.

Yeah, that's one thing I loved about Bad Company 2. It's a better overall sniper game, and it taught me to be a better sniper.
Granted I'm still pretty average, but I'm much better now about getting headshots and clean shots without the need for follow-up as often. Except it did take me some time to realize I didn't have to compensate for distance nor need to compensate as much for a moving target.
Which reminds me I freakin' love Russian rifles. No scope Mosin-Nagant in World at War was amazing, SV-98 Snaiperskaya in Bad Company 2 was my marksman rifle of choice, and an ACOG-scoped Dragunov is my second favorite rifle after the L96A1. <.<
Russian and English sniper rifles FTW!

I have said this many times in this thread, but I would like to see the M110 in future Shooters.
One thing I disliked about BC2 was the way the scopes looked. It would have played it more if my dad didn't play it as well and yell at me when I have shit games.
I hated how there's not many good secondary weapons in Black Ops. Which is kind of like BC2. I might be ok with using pistols but its quite annoying using a whole clip on 2 guys but then having to reload and then get taken out by a 3rd guy.
It sucks that L96A1 starts off with only 20 bullets all together. It means you can either die to get ammo back, or have either a Extended Mag or Scavenger on. Which would screw you over, since you might have needed different perks or attachements.

I actually like the selection of secondaries. I'm glad that Treyarch refused to allow sub-machine guns (machine pistols) and shotguns as secondaries. Definitely makes things more balanced.
That said I would kill for them to get rid of Second Chance.
To me, Commando and Stopping Power weren't nearly as annoying as Last Stand/Second Chance especially with the Python. I can't count the number of times I killed someone, attempted to move on only to have one to two magnum rounds in my chest and I die. ARGH!
And I don't see why so many people argue the pistols all seem "samey". Really? I have my favorites. Makarov is my favorite standard pistol with most classes, Python often goes on my sniper class or an auto CZ75.
As for the ammo capacity of the L96A1, I'm not often bothered by that. I'm often not going on a streak long enough before I end up running out of ammo. And on the handful of times I have I just run around and knife until I die.

I prefered Machine Pistols and Shotguns as secondaries actually. Made it so I could actually defend myself at close range. Seeing that I suck at quick-scoping and the fact the I am more of a conventional sniper.
Now last stand has saved my ass god knows how many times. I am so happy that they made it so people can revive you.
I don't tend to use .45 Magnum in MW2 or the Pyhton in Black Ops due to the fact I cant aim for shit with it. I did find it funny that you can put a Acog scope on a Python. That reminds me of Fallout 3
While in spite that I can see how Pistols differ from each other and the fact that I can actually use them. I prefer it if they had put stronger pistols in the game. I am not good at always getting headshots. The fact that whenever I am in last stand I end up shooting guys legs is the proof to that.

I've been wanting to get my hands on that game. Pretty mediocre to negative reviews, but a lot of them stem from it just being sniping mechanics and the difficulty.
... uh duh? Heaven forbid a game with the first word being Sniper should have to be anything other than sniping, and I can't imagine that sniping is a walk in the park in real life. They do say that sniper fans might love it though. That would be me.

Apparently in that game instead of making it challanging they just made it so your enemy only ever aims at you. and with high accuracy.
and acctually I heard you can use an assault rifle in one level.

Well I often ran around with my Intervention and my PP2000, but at the same time I occasionally used standard pistols as well. Snipers should have to get their kills by sniping. If you happen to let an enemy get close then that likely means you let your guard down, and you should have to rely on your skills with a secondary weapon, which shouldn't be as powerful as your primaries. Maybe I'm too idealistic though.
I'm not terribly good with the Python myself, but I often don't ADS with it, and only use it when I'm going from point A to point B in a confined space where I don't stand a chance of sniping my target in close-to-mid range, or when I run out of ammo on my sniper rifle.
As for Last Stand/Second Chance I just don't know. It doesn't irk me as much that the person went into a prone, vulnerable, position, but it should be limited to only as a reviving option. You shouldn't be able to act against the person who shot you so quickly. At the very least, they shouldn't have allowed the Python in Second Chance just as how they don't allow a CZ75 that is automatic. Most people seem to be bothered by it more as a possible way to lose a kill. While it does irk me when sometimes an ally "robs" me of my kill and I get stuck with an assist, it doesn't bother me as much as occasionally be killed by a person I legitimately downed.

I used Intervention or .50 Barrett and a G18 as my Secodary with either Akimbo, FMJ or Extended Mags. I like having Akimbo weapons as my seondary.
Most times I get taken out before I get to kill them. So I see it as pretty balanced. Maybe if you use it you might end up liking it more?
When I play Black Ops I used L96A1 and a pistol as my secondary. But I usually get my kills with the sniper.

Well, I do like using Machine Pistols, but at the same time it made me feel like I was more powerful than I was. Most of the time I carried an Intervention w/ Stopping Power and a PP2000. Granted, I spent as much time camp sniping as I was moving around the field, and I'm not trying to "toot my own horn" but I never went lower than a 1.00 KD/R in a match with that set up. It was too difficult to get around snipers. Sure you might be able to get around their Claymore(s), but if they were paying close attention it was easy to whip around and pump them full of machine pistol lead.
As for Black Ops, I use either the L96A1 with a Variable Scope or SUSAT Scope (depending on the map size) or a WA2000 with ACOG. Only thing about the L96A1 I don't like is run-and-gunning with the SUSAT. I don't understand why, but aiming down the SUSAT while you are motion is random at best. I've shot targets that were moving, scope them, fire, kill. Good as gold. Then there have been targets standing still, fire in the chest, fire in the chest again... again... again... and nothing. I'm not kidding. I've wasted an entire Extended Mags clip, which is fifteen, on a stationary bot and got no hit indicators. That's the sole reason I end up using a WA2000 with ACOG when I'm run-and-gunning on smaller maps like Nuketown.
Also I'm starting to use my Crossbow a lot more on my Sniper class. I'm starting to get proficient enough with it to use it at close range instead of relying on a pistol, and not too bad at using at range as secondary weapon as well. I still worship a Makarov w/ Extended Mags, though.
Anyway, because I can I'll show my Sniper classes:
Modern Warfare 2
Primary: Intervention w/ FMJ
Secondary: PP2000 w/ Extended Mags
Equipment: Claymore
Special Grenade: Stun
Tier 1 Perk: Sleight of Hand (Pro)
Tier 2 Perk: Stopping Power (Pro)
Tier 3 Perk: SitRep (Pro)
Black Ops
Primary: L96A1 w/ Variable Scope
Secondary: Crossbow or Makarov w/ Extended Mags
Equipment: Camera Spike
Lethal: Tomahawk
Tactical: Concussive
Tier 1 Perk: Scavenger (Pro)
Tier 2 Perk: Scout (Pro)
Tier 3 Perk: Marathon (Pro)
