Good 'ole DooM - As in Brutal DooM

Who would've thought that such an old game would cause me to shout at the monitor while dodging lots of fireballs with only 5% because of the major screwups?
Point is - those new games are just not good enough(or they are shit) if friggin 19 years old game give WAY MORE FUN than any AAA project. WTF?
Especially this Brutal DooM mod. Never thought that possibility of giving demons the finger, or just shouting and throwing your fist in the air would make so much difference. And more blood too of course.

its the new generation of gamers. Easy=funNever quite thought of it that way. Now that you mention it, today's ames are way more forgiving. Remember the days when there were limited lives. Now you just respawn all the time.

its the new generation of gamers. Easy=funNew games are fun story-wise, dunno about "easy". For action games it's all about fair challenge.
On the other hand games that have unfair difficulty sucks too.
For example, when I play JRPG I want to enjoy the story, so why do I have to friggin grind half(or more) of the game time? I call this bullshit. Battle mechanics in JRPGs sucks anyway, I get no fun from it.

One of my peeves in modern games is the recovering health bullshit in most shooters. One of the greatest tension builders in old-school gaming was dragging your bullet-ridden carcass to the nearest health kit that you haven't already consumed due to poor judgement. I cannot describe just how badly the X-labs in Return to Castle Wolfenstein had me stressed out due to the sparking, mutated bullet-sponges that would drain my health just as badly as my remaining supply of ammo. I'd have to spend at least a good half hour scrounging for any secret areas for much needed sustenance. And God help you when you get to that final boss without enough preparation to help you wipe out a small army.
Recovering health effectively turns what should be a battle of skills and tactics into a war of attricion. Nowadays, all I have to do in any major encounter is hide behind a rock for a few moments for my health can build back up so I can safely pop back out, ready for round two.

My thoughts exactly.

I won't deny it, majority of today's modern games are pretty dumbed down compared to what we had in old school gaming, but not entirely.
Examples of what I mean by dumbed down. Halo is pretty tough on Legendary, but there's just the fact that it has that Health Regeneration (Halo 1 had Shield Regeneration, you still needed health packs).
- Megaman for NES (Hard) compared to Megaman Powered Up for PSP (Moderately Easy)
- Contra for NES (without the 30 lives cheat) and Contra III for SNES (Hard) compared to Hard Corps Uprising (Easy to Moderately Normal)
- Doom/Doom II on Nightmare difficulty (Frustrating) compared to Halo on Legendary Difficulty (Very Hard)

How many times have I died a fiery/lightining death by that big dude in the pool of lava in Quake?
I've lost count.
All I know is it took me forever.. until I found out that you can't kill the guy with regular weapons and you had to find this switch..
I was 7 back then.

Regenerating health is fuck annoying. I'd rather go back to finding health pots/kits laying around and trying to survive on what little I have around me.
It's fun for certain games or given the circumstances of said "hero" but being implemented in just about every game is damn annoying.
Duke....why!?

I think one of the few recent games that pulled off health regen was Rage. This is mostly due to the rate of healing being borderline useless to depend on as most of your enemies are going to rush your ass anyway, giving you absolutely no time at all for you to heal. That effectively forces you to heavily rely on your medkits and sheer abundance of dakka to stay alive in the heat of the action. Thankfully, since the gunplay in Rage is so damned good, this actually turns out to be a good thing, or at very least, something that would be hard to find fault with.

I kept hearing bad things about the game, mainly how on PC it's generally just reloading textures every time you turn that and it generally was just "meh" I did get it with the ID pack over the steam christmas sales and I have been interested in trying it out at least so I may give it a go.

I bought Rage for the 360 and even installed the discs. Game ran beautifully. I did hear about some problems about how Rage didn't run properly on some PCs, but I don't really know the specifics. Like I said before, Rage probably has the best gunplay in the FPS genre (on consoles, anyway). The controls are tight and the guns just feel right. The only complaint I have for the game is the subpar ending, otherwise, I thought that the game was amazing.

Walp, I'll give it a go then.
Probably start the dl while I'm sleeping. Maybe they fixed the issues with it by now, hopefully.

Rage is good but somehow feels off, know what I'm sayin'?
Now and then it just, you know, DooM 3.
DooM 3 kinda impressed me back then, but now I think it's rather unplayable(It's funny because I still replay DooM 1&2)

I think it's the nature of the game. When you think about it, most of the missions in the game are pretty much fetch quests, leaving the only satisfactory parts of the game to be the ones where you kill shit. The racing was some good fun too, but I think id could've went a little deeper with it.
