Graphics vs. Game play
0
It seems many games either give us one or the other. i first thought this about the game donkey kong country. it looked much prettier than the other games around that time, but the game itself was a bag of crap. some of my favorite games didn't look good but were very involving and fun, but didn't look very good. there have been a few exceptions over the years, i just can't think of any off the top of my head.
what do you think is more important?
i think game play vastly out weighs graphics. i don't care how much make up and fancy clothes you put on a pig, in the end, it's still a pig. does anyone else feel this way, or am i just lost in the fevered dream of a mad man?

I feel you, man. A game has to have actual gameplay, or else it's not a game, just eyecandy or an interactive book.
It's nice when it got both though...

I agree gameplay trumps graphics for the most part but for me there's a point where the graphics are so bad that the game becomes all but unplayable no matter how good the gameplay is otherwise. I can't get into Dwarf Fortress, for instance, and I don't like most of the older Final Fantasy games for the same reason (5 and 6 are alright, but forget about 1-4). Above that threshold, though, anything goes. I still play Final Fantasy IX and Legend of Dragoon on my PS3 every now and then, which bugs the hell out of my kid brother (and I quote, "Dude, why the hell are you playing those old-ass games on a PS3?").

Kind of Important
A ray of Tsunlight.
Game Play, I still crack out DoS based games (Despite the fact I was like 2 when they starting coming out) Like Star Control II. Never played it? Get it, and discover what all good games should strive to be like.

StarCraft II has both I'd say. The graphics are wickedly and the physics is realistic. The gameplay is like your ordinary strtegy games but if you played SC its a whole lot of improvement on gameplay.

gameplay is better then graphics. i play my ps2 abit more then my 360 because of persona 3 and 4. im a rpg fan and im not willing to pay $60 for a rpg game with OMG awesome graphics with less gameplay.

For me both count, but if I had to choose, I'd say gameplay. However there are tons and tons of games, some of which have gameplay flaws that can be overlooked if they have good enough graphics, given that they are not TOO faulty.
There are a few games however, that have had both great graphics and gameplay for their time:
- Mass Effect 1, 2
- Devil May Cry series
- Onimusha series
- Assassin's Creed series
- Gex series :D
- Toomba :D

i feel that both are needed. without good graphics, even if the gameplay is awesome, the game itself is eh...

Gameplay makes us play moar/addicted ..
Graphic make us interested to the game ..
Both are factors that can decide quality of game beside Story ..
and if i have to choose .. i prefer "good gameplay but not too good graphic" than "very great graphic with crappy gameplay"

I agree with this~

I think the answer will be Gameplay...
a game with a good graphic but have a bad gameplay won't make us interested to play it...
but a game with a good gameplay, even the graphic is bad, can make us to forget about the graphic and plays the game~

a good game is good, when it has enough graphic quality and good enough gameplay, supported by good enough story.
sacrifice one of them and you'll get FAIL game.

Like what they did in Modern Warfare 2. Put everything into Graphics, give a shitty excuse of a Story and make Gameplay camp friendly.
It's just the hype that gave it high reviews and many sold copies.

I believe all things are important in game making, right down to sound effects. However, gameplay will always be one of the more important factors in a game. If the game isn't fun, no one's gonna want to play it.

This. However, let's say the game was slacking in graphics I wouldn't mind and it would still be a decent game if it had the gameplay+story. However, with all the new games coming out, nice graphics seem to be a must, I mean even the crappy games have good graphics now...
