However, with all the new games coming out, nice graphics seem to be a must, I mean even the crappy games have good graphics now...I see a direct correlation there. If the game is crap, it must somehow counterbalance it's shortcomings to still make some bucks for the greedy bastards who rather put out some games for quick cash than to actually make good ones.
But what is "bad graphics" anyway? For some people, that's even if the game is in 2D which makes me facepalm real hard.
One game that stands out for good gameplay, but not really good graphics would be Katamari Damacy, in my opinion...

this.
also, gameplay without decent graphics = I won't be playing it for a second. I don't want my eyes to be in constant pain, no matter how "good" the gameplay.
supreme graphics AND supreme gameplay or gtfo.

"bad graphics" would be like a ps3 game with ps1 graphics or ps2 graphics. Not sure how to explain that. Just if it doesn't look good compared to the next new released game then you're doing it wrong.
Katamari is indeed fun, the graphics could be improved :3 but nonetheless loads of fun.

Agreed, although I like DKC2 a lot more. The third part not so much, though... And also agreed on the soundtrack. I used to play it just for the music at times until I got the soundtrack as MP3s from a friend. Even my mom immediately recognizes some tracks (she really loves Water Music :D).

This is the most blunt answer I can give you:Game play >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Graphics
fixed.
Look at games like Zelda: ALTTP or Vagrant Story or Suikoden II and games like that. Not good graphics put that doesn't change the fact that they are awesome.

I believe all things are important in game making, right down to sound effects. However, gameplay will always be one of the more important factors in a game. If the game isn't fun, no one's gonna want to play it.i forgot games that blow all their budget on big name actors to voice the charaters. leaving no money for game design or graphics.

I think it would have been better if it was a discussion about which is better, "Improved Graphics vs Improved/Advanced GamePlay". Most games I own have both. Metal Gear is a great example as where you always get improved graphics and new gameplay elements with each new game. I mean most game just take the gameplay off other games and just up the graphic elements and it's still concidered a good game (but I don't though). Case and point Dante's Inferno, which is now laughable since God of War III is out.
I would go more into detail, but I'm not Ramsus so I won't.

Graphics will always be second to game play. I don't care how good a game looks, if the game play sucks....the entire game sucks.

Never played a bad game anyway because it was pretty.
Played a not so pretty game because it was good numerous times.
There's your answer.

Gameplay is much more important, always.I enjoy games even if their graphics isn't that good.
What will make me want to beat the game is the good gameplay.
Else, I'll be bored.
Graphics, is important too in my humble opinion. I do appreciate games with good graphics but the gameplay can't be sacrificed for this.
i completely agree..!

Even though I give importance to both elements I give more weight to Gameplay. The difference between a movie and a game is that games are more immersive since it actually lets viewers become participants thus the term 'gamers'. All graphics and cinematics without the proper gameplay would just be a 20 hours long movie while the audience ask "Why is this movie so long?" and "Why am I holding this weird V-Shaped plastic?"
But what I really value the most apart from the two is the plot and how the game does its story telling. There are some PSx and PS2 games that I favour morethan the PS3 games even though the later beats them in both gameplay and plot. An example would be Silent Hill 2 compared to Silent Hill Homecoming. While Silent Hill 2 keeps slapping your face with its bad gameplay and piss horrible graphics it's still worth defending because of how it told its story. Its graveyard silent atmosphere gives this pressure that draws me in while constantly trying to listen to the dialouge muffled by my broken speakers. In Silent Hill 2 I really felt being alone and helpless because it really is SILENT. Not the kind of silent that those idiots in Aliens vs Predator have, which is silent because they just fucked up, but the kind of psychotic silent that's eerie and far more scary than zombie moans that we've heard from time to time from our resident evil friends. All I'm saying is that Graphics and Gameplay are important elements indeed but sometimes just to fulfill the needs of the fans for these two elements game designers forget this other important element which I rarely find in games these days. If there's one game I'll praise for combining these three elements nicely it would be Bioshock One. But I won't be saying why since that's another LONG story.

Graphics is just the skin. It shows how beautiful the game is.
Game play is the heart, it makes the game come to life
Graphics only enhances game play, it cannot live without game play.
Without game play you have a shitty game or an awesome movie

Gameplay should come before anything else. It's a GAME, for fuck's sake. If it sucks to play, then it fails at its prime objective. It's like a piece of fruit that smells great but tastes like shit.
Good graphics can be a bonus, but sometimes, it doesn't matter. I can play old games, and the crappy graphics (by today's standards) don't take away any of the fun. If you refuse to play any game with subpar graphics (again, by today's standards), then you're saying "fuck off" to every game on the Playstation and before, and there are a ton of great games that you're going to miss out on.
Past aside, what about games that purposely throw top-of-the-line graphics aside, like the last two Megaman games? They went full retro, and both games have gotten a lot of praise. Should they dismissed simply because they look like NES games?

i agree. gameplay > graphics. BUT performance trumps all. i dont care how amazing a game is, if its chugging along at 10 frames per second im not gonna enjoy it. im really picky about things like frame tearing.
but really, i don't think there's any good excuse anymore for a game to not have everything at its best. you can have great gameplay, graphics, and performance all at the same time. Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, and many other games prove its possible.

Graphics vs. Game play....
How about choice C: STORY!!!
I'm sorry, but if the game has got an awesome story, then I really don't care how the gameplay or graphics are; nothing else truly matters to me.
i.e.---I might be hurting some people, but the only thing holding back the 13th installment of Final Fantasy from a perfect score is the STORY.
BUT.....
if I had to choose, it would be gameplay >=3

Anyways, I dont always rely on having graphics more, but unfortuantly Its harder for me to play games without the awesome graphics and scenes.
But take The Disgaea games, They are awesome but they are all sprite characters, Does this make a bad game? No.
As long as the graphics are not terrible I can survive.

I feel certain graphic styles help certain games. If a game is intended to have cartoonish graphics (ie; Serious Sam 2, Phoenix Wright, Pokemon) then it doesn't concern me and I'll enjoy the graphics/gameplay fully.
On the other hand if a game is trying to go for the realistic approach it seems to get a bit more points from me if the graphics are immersive.
