H-scenes in Visual Novels.

I love Visual Novels. My first was Katawa Shoujo that I found on the Facepunch forum on a thread. I later on played Sagara Family and the Yume Miru Kusuri and now I'm into Brass Restoration. Katawa was a wonderful game and I follow the devblog because I want the full game. Sagara Family is the best one so far and Yume Miru was awesome also. Then I played Brass restoration. Loved the story. Loved the artwork. But when I completed the good ending for Minori, it felt empty. I thought about why it felt empty. The reason was that it didn't have H-scenes.
I normally get annoyed by the H-scenes in VN:s and think they are unnecessary most of the time, but I realize that without them, the VN is not complete.
Now I wonder, do you people think the same or am I the only one?

Depends on the VN. Brass Restoration's story is similar to most typical eroge, which is pretty much what you've been playing until now, so I can see why you'd miss the H-scenes there. However, I'd like to hear your opinion again after you've played Ever17, for example.

It really depends on the game. Some ecchi scenes can be necessary to the plot and it could be quite dull to say "and they had sex" and move on to the next scene.
Try playing G-Senjou no Maou.

It seems that you've played only typical VNs at the moment. KS is incomplete so nothing can really be said about it... The Sagara Family was full of laughs, but still a simple love story. YMK is better than the other two in my opinion because it took it a step further by addressing and attacking issues such as bullying and drug abuse in high school students, but in the end it is still just a mostly normal love story.
Based on this, what I think you're feeling is that standard love stories just don't seem complete without the characters having sex. In this regard then I do agree with you, however this does not apply to all VNs. The H-scenes are there to enhance the story, not to complete or make up the story (except in something like Fate/Stay Night where it had plot purpose), so whether or not the VN has H-scenes is entirely situation and dependent on the plot, setting and genre of the VN.
Cause face it, you've only played 1 non-H VN (based on the info in your post), so making a claim like yours is bit pretentious. Try different genres of non-H games and I bet your opinion will change. I highly recommend Chaos;Head, Ever17 and Clannad, all of which are non-H but still amazing.

I find that most H-scenes do not last more than 6 frames, just hold down the enter key until it passes.

Many visual novels work without h-scenes. Most all current PC based visual novels have at some point been ported to a console. The console versions have all h-scenes removed. Some of the oldest ones off the top of my head are from my own collection. I have Kakyuusei (the first one) on my Sega Saturn, which was ported in the mid-90's. The PC game originally has h-scenes, but this version has none.
Most any eroge visual novel you can think of has an all-ages console port in Japan.
Then again, some visual novels really know how to use h-scenes. Season of the Sakura comes to mind. You don't get the h-scenes until you complete a girl's route, meaning it's more of a sense of accomplishment when you actually get to see the main character and a selected girl having sex (as opposed to sex occurring thoughout).

In the end it all depends on what you're playing.
Eroge are always VN, but VN are not always eroge
don't get that mixed together.
If you're playing something that is sex-oriented, expect it to have over the top amount of H-scenes and vise-versa for non sex-oriented ones.
It's not about whether a VN needs a H-scene or not it's about The way of utilizing and the amount of it
Like fiero said, Seasons of Sakura was one of the nicest example, and Fate/stay Night used it as a plot device which means it wasn't forced (the anime omitted for obvious reason).
@typewrite The problem of your annoyance is you've been playing TOO much sex oriented VNs, compared to the one that are not. that's why you got the illusion that H-scenes are annoying when you clearly want something more light in flavor.
Try playing ones that does not make H-scenes a "everyday" thing, but H-scenes that makes you feel that you accomplished something.
this can also work when you're playing a BDSM VN, where making the heroine your sex slave is an accomplishment... lol
one other funny example, I just played 2 NTR VNs, and getting the "non-NTR" ending is the same level of getting a bad ending, while the NTR ending is the "True End".
Like I said, It depends on the content. :d

The H scenes in G-Senjou is mostly comfort sex, so I'd say it does impact the plot?Spoiler:
Well that right there is plot purpose sex then.

I like when there are some ecchi and maybe even h scenes in my VN. It keeps me going and is a nice suprise. All the H scenes in Majikoi unfortunately are in the "post game" stories. You have to complete the game in order to get to the fun stuff. If I hadn't gotten my hands on a 100% completion file to watch/see some of scenes, I woulda gone nuts
