Greetings. I'm doing some research in order to improve my game I'm making. If you have a second, please vote. Thanks.
By 'old school rpg', I mean any 2d rpg that had very limited or no additional ingame artwork or videos. Games like Final Fantasy 6 (and under), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc.
In other words, did the interaction of 2d character sprites, only, evoke an emotion in you before?

Just once.
I was really angry at how bad Dragon Quest 7 was. I've sworn off JRPG's forever because of it.
Oh, wait. You mean sprite era games. Ah, Suikoden 2, when Nanami was hurt.

never emotional to cry but i got angry at the plot twist that i should have seen coming.
i was playing Breath of Fire one, the story in the beginning was to save your sister for the evil guy who kidnapped her and kill him for doing so and destroying your home. So im living life adventuring then later the sister tells you to get a magical orb to kill the evil guy. so when i got the orb and gave it to the sister you know what happened she gave it to the evil guy. i should have seen it coming but i was to excited from getting further in the story after being stuck for months. anyway i was pissed i was like 'i risk my life to save you and you're helping the evil guy? you bitch'.
but anyway yeah crying from a video game was hard for me during the sprite generation mostly we usually got a silent protagonist, those guy suck butt. also that there wasn't enough character interacting, story that involved the other other characters for me to care about or those character portrait we see now when the characters talk to show their emotions.

I totally shed tears while reading "Signpost", a short story in Lost Odyssey. Actually, i had teary eyes on a bunch of those stories, but Signpost was the one that hit me the most.
Another that made me hate the hero and prolly one of my "WTF O_o" moment is:

I have very good feelings associated with a lot of RPG from the SNES or PS era. There were a lot of very good games, and even if graphics were really bad, they still managed to make the game a good catalyst for emotions.

Mustn't Run Away...
rage is the dominant feeling I got in those games...so much fucking rage , but I did get a few good laughs ,and even a sense of awe from a select few titles

One classic RPG has evoked more emotion in me than almost any other video game/anime/book/etc. and that is Earthbound.
The most emotional part is in the spoiler below.
Don't read this if you plan on playing the game and don't want any spoilers!
Other old school RPGs have had a similar effect on me including: the various losses in Final Fantasy IV, the sprite fading away at the end of Secret of Mana and some others I can't think of right now.

Phantasy Star 4, a game that done something years before Final Fantasy 7. It had a major character permanently die. It's still my favorite game from the Genesis.

Earthbound (and also mother 3 later) both had some extremely good and sad moments. I loved those games, damn...
Also, Phantasy star 4 is prolly one of the best games ever, not just on the genesis system. Its mainly a cult hit, but all JRPG lovers should play it at least once in their lives. Also, the music is off the fucking hook.
