I'm new to pc gaming, any recommendations?

I just built a decent gaming computer (i7 2600k 3.4 GHz, 8 gb RAM, radeon 6850), and I obviously want to play some games. The problem is that I'm completely clueless about computer gaming. Can y'all recommend some popular high-performance games that I should get, or redirect me to a website that rates & reviews them?
I'm sorry if this belongs in the request section; it's unclear whether or not "recommendations" belong in "requests"

well, the types of games you can be recommended ti is vast, you should start off by telling us what genre of games do you like? rpg? shooter? etc... if you dont specify we cant really recommend a game you might enjoy.

Like the post above says, pretty much cannot help effectively until we know what genre you enjoy.

I'm mostly interested in a FPS, but i'm also willing to play most other genres, as long as they're good.
I mostly want to know what the most popular low-cost game is, and not the new expensive games. For example; battlefield 2 costs $7, while battlefield 3 costs $50. Should I get battlefield 2? Or is the online mode not popular enough or something? Sites like gametrailers don't really take into account stuff like this, which is why I ask a community like this.

TF2. It's free to play now. It's pretty much the best FPS to play these days. Transitions for relax goofing around fun to pretty serious business. You can just play around in pubs or decide to go improve your skills and go pugging and mge mod stuff.

Well I'd reccomend Left 4 Dead 2, it's a pretty good game that doesn't get boring when you play with your friends online, and if you haven't tried it out yet: go and get it or see some gameplay on Youtube to get a grip on how you play.

Though seeing as this is the PC we're talking about, you should learn about piracy and skidrow...
Also yeah TF2 is a good free to play fps now, other awesome games include Skyrim, BF3, SC2, and the whole lot already mentioned.

Get Civilization V and say goodbye to your social life. Or rather, your life in general. Game'll suck up an entire day without you realizing it. I cannot tell you how many times I've promised myself that, "I'll stop at the next tech discovery and then go to bed" and then find myself still awake at 5 in the morning, preparing a massive nuclear assault that'd make the Red Scare look like an evening at the DMV.
If world domination's not your thing, there's always Team Fortress 2; a class-based team multiplayer FPS game. It's even better for you since it became free to play not too long ago. While you're at it, you should just go ahead and get anything/everything developed by Valve.

Since you're on a PC now then I would recommend games that are online-based, like Starcraft II and any upcoming MMORPG (Star Wars Old Republic, TERA Online, FFXIV, to name a few). I hear the Witcher II, Skyrim, and even Crysis II are great games for benchmarking your PC's specs (especially in the visuals department).

Half-Life 1,2 and all relative expansions (graphics isn't great for HL1 and expansion, but believe me it worth it).
L4D 1,2 and also Portal 1,2 (that is not a real fps, its in first person but is a puzzle game, very well made anyway...).
Borderlands too is awesome.

Must plays if you're into FPS:
Half life source (Half Life 1 remastered on source engine)
Half life 2, episode 1&2 (Very cheap these days)
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Fallout Vegas (fps survival) and/or Skyrim (fantasy adventure)
As for multiplayer I recommend getting Battlefield Bad Company 2 (only 10-15 dollars or less) to see if you like playing Battlefield gameplay. If so, get Battlefield 3.
Starcraft 2 is also my personal favorite RTS right now if you're into them.
Not sure about any MMORPGs but I would take a look at EVE Online.
