MGS3 is the best of the series so far!MGS PW is a little weird but ok.
MGS2 is awesome with all the mindfuck!
And i'm currently playing MGS4, I'm having a Boss battle with Ocelot! ^_^
I'm afraid I got to agree with you on MGS3 being the best of the series, I mean, you get to play as Big Boss, the one who was responsible for making the Metal Gear series happen in the first place and learn first hand why he became the man he turned to up to the current MGS timeline. This and the original PS1 version of MGS were the reasons I got hooked to the series.
Peace Walker, I heard was also good, but I wished they included Portable Ops, I never got around to learning the story around that one since I didn't have a PSP at the time it came out.
MGS2 was really random, but Raiden and Solidus being there were the reasons I stuck throughout the story and I loved the VR missions, good way to challenge your MGS skills.
I have yet to play MGS4 since the game's release, but the Ocelot battle was said to be one of gaming's greatest epic battles.

I will eventually get to that, MGS4 was one of the reasons I wanted a PS3, but I never got the chance to play it even though I already watched the whole game on YouTube the same week the game came out years ago, though I will just play it for the experience.
And by the way, I managed to platinum Snake Eater a couple of days ago, one of the easiest and best plats ever for my collection.

Some like, some don't overall it's a great experience.
MGS 3 = FUCK YEA.
This game is something else, now you don't play as Gay-den or solid snake, you play as Naked snake aka Big boss.
You will not be disappointed.
MGS PW this game is somewhat a arcade game, it's just for plain fun.
But never-the-less awesome just be sure to have a buddy!
