Yes, the main recommendations are in consideration of english readers only. Same goes for Cross Channel and Sharin no Kuni

Most of the titles in "Fakku recommends" thread is worth playing through, particularly for somebody starting out (as most of the games in that thread are translated...if not all of them).
Personally, I would recommend Utawarerumono, which has both amazing storyline, pretty neat art, and some "interactive" elements (battles and character leveling of sorts afterward).
If you want something more with your VN, particularly simple RTS-style battles and country management, Sengoku Rance is a good choice.
G-senjou no Maou is another choice, with a mind-blowing criminal plot. It's not fully translated, but the team's getting there and partial patch (two first chapters) are already out.
And I'd also have to recommend Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shojou as yeah321 did. It's pretty long, and has varied plot. It's actually made by the same developer as the one for G-senjou.

Clannad made me cry, which was only the second time after reading VNs for so long. It's a VN you cannot regret reading. The most beautiful VN story ever.
Kira Kira was the first. If you enjoy music get this.
