New Xbox problem?
0
I bought the new slim Xbox 360, and i was playing Fallout New Vegas on it for a couple of hours, the xbox is supposedly not supposed to overheat, but mine got really hot, like i touched the top of it and it was almost hot enough to burn me, it was also giving off this weird smell, like when you first turn on the heater in a car, I was wondering if this is normal or just a defective xbox, my old one never got this hot ever, anybody else had this happen?
also, I have a ps3, so dont post fanboy shit

sounds like the ventilation isn't working correctly or not at all.
are the vents in the back working? if the vents are in fact working then it might be a bad connection somewhere inside the xbox.

You should return it to the store you bought it at and get a new one. The 360 S still runs a bit hot during games like New Vegas, but based off what you said about the smell I would assume that there's some faulty hardware inside the case.
Fiddling around on the insides of your brand new 360 is probably the worst thing you can do at this point, aside from "nothing". Don't play that particular 360 any more, as it could lead to some serious issues, not to mention make your room smell, just return it first thing tomorrow.

I've got the MW2 special edition xbox 360, has somewhat the same problem, but only when I play Fallout New Vegas...
Edit~ Could be the defective, I would return it if it does it again...

ill see how it plays tomorrow, if it still persists ill return itThis is rather unwise. Perhaps the initial problems stop, but the damage may already have been done. You will more than likely suffer down the line because you chose to overlook the problem. Again, I urge you to simply return the console and exchange it for a new one at the store.

Your X-Box 360 Slim is going to die if you keep using it. Send it back as soon as possible and do not turn it on. Your cooling system was either faulty when shipped, something went terribly wrong while playing Fallout: New Vegas or you placed your 360 in a bad location, causing it to be unable to disperse heat properly.
When you turn any older heater that has been in a moist environment the rust burns off of the heating element and it smells like burning plastic. To test if it's ozone sacrifice a 9 volt (or small-sized) battery by taking a wire and short-circuiting between the terminals to make sparks. If what you smell is the same smell that was coming from your 360, it's would be a very good idea to never turn it on again.
When a company says that a system is not supposed to over-heat, they mean that it will not over-heat under regular operating conditions. Area temperature of 20 °C (68 °F) to 25 °C (77 °F), solid metal or hard-wood surface underneath and plenty of space for heat dispersion.
As consoles are not video games, would this thread not be more appropriately placed in the Computers & Technology section? It is as far as I've seen also the tech support section and the problem the topic creator is having does fall in line with tech support.
