The PS3 can bring up the resolution on PS1 games if you want to, also the loading times are shorter on the PS3.

I suggest you use the PS3. It can slightly improve the graphics(HARDLY noticeable) & the load times are shorter. Concerning your question about external memory card recievers for the PS3 they do exist but are hard as fuck to find without the internetz. Unless you have valuable data you want to transfer though I suggest you just create an internal memory card on the PS3 anyways. Its easier to keep up with as well. Hope this was helpful.
