PS3 Backwards Compatability

Didn't find a topic in the master list, but I'm sure it's already been done.
Anyway, does the PS3 have backwards compatibility, and is it restricted to some games? Mine is the 40GB, big one, don't know anything else about it (got it used), but if any one has some pointers that would be cool.

If it's not a slim ,and it's from your region then yes it's backwards compatible ,and it's just restricted to region codes ,but some games are said to play better then others ,but I have yet to have any problems.
Edit:sorry my bad didn't see you wrote 40gb..ya you don't have backwards compat.

As far as I know, I don't think it's possible. Should point out that I'm not too sure about it though.
Just buy the PS3 HD remakes of those few, if you really want to play PS2 games.

List of PS3s:

You should also note that the entire Slim line is only backwards compatible with Playstation 1 games, but not PS2. Secondly, if you notice, any PS3 with Backwards Compatibility has 4 usb ports, which was another feature removed in later models.
Most of the older Fat versions are BC to both PS1 and PS2 games, but full BC functionality was removed in the later Fat and Slim models to reduce production cost. There is talk of Sony wanting to release a firmware update to all PS3 models to enable full BC support, but those are simply rumors.

A firmware update wouldn't work becuase the ps3 models that can play ps2 games have the ps2's hardware inside of it. Whereas the newer fat and slim models don't have the hardware. They only play psx games because of emulation.
