Hey Folks
Got a quick question I just finishing watching both Shining Hearts and wind X Tears and I thought it would be interesting to buy both games.
And since I'm planning to buy a ps3 anyways I might as well since I heard from my uncle that you can actually play ps2 games on your ps3 console.
But I want to make sure if that is indeed the case and if so what version should I buy?
Some say I should buy the 80 GB while others say the 40 GB one so Im kind of confused as to which model is really compatible?
Any info will help thanks.

You can only play PlayStation 2 games on certain PlayStation 3s. The ones that came out before Metal Gear Solid 4, if memory serves correct. Meaning you need to get the Fridge version, and you need to hope that you're lucky enough to have gotten a Fridge old enough to play PlayStation 2 games. So long as it came out before a certain time period, it doesn't matter how much memory it has.
Also, your title is misleading.

Only a certain model of the 40 and 80 GB will work, but the 60 GB will work. Get a 60GB!

its kinda hard to find a PS3 that plays PS2 games in stores kinda. Its like the very first models of the PS3 that can play PS2 games.

The problem with the older PS3's though, is that they tend to die out quicker because of the bad parts.
But to answer your question, I say get the 80 GB one.

I say buy a PS2 for $20 at your local Gamestop or whatever it is you have where you are and save yourself the hassle of spending at least five times that much on a PS3 and hoping it's an old enough model. Like a few people have mentioned already, the backwards compatible PS3's are somewhat hard to find and are prone to dying to bad parts that were replaced or cycled out in the newer models. The downside is you have to manage memory cards and older hardware, the upside is you save yourself some money and a lot of trouble.

As most have already pointed out only certain ps3s can play ps2 games. Just find a recent ps3 for a decent price since there are some ps2 classics on the playstation store and you can buy games like Jak and Daxter hd collection, Metal Gear Solid hd collection, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War hd collection(comes out soon). You should also think about looking at a Vita if you are interested when or if there is a price drop.

I've decided I'll buy a ps2.
It might save me the hassle of worrying about buying the right console.
Also I do have some games that I want to play that I didnt get the chance to. Well thanks everyone.

I still have my PS2 when they were all the rage. Taken it apart to clear it of dust once. That was a good day.

I wish I still had my Goliath. All was lost in the great purge but I managed to save my ps2. Thank God.

It's a shame JRPG voice acting for PS3 sucks, the games are amazing, but the voice acting still sucks, so thats why always switch it JAP :D
a perfect example is "Star Ocean: The Last Hope" great game, horrible voice acting, so bad that they made the PS3 version and special edition that came with an anime menu and JAP voice acting reinstalled

Playing ps2 games on another system? let me enumerate.
PS3 = Not all models compatible, good emulator
PSP = Almost all games work as long as it's converted, there are forums with literally hundreds of ready to play ps1 games, the only problem with this is no buttons for the r2 and l2, good portable emulator
PC = ( > medium spec gaming rig ) plays EVERY game ever (ISO and CD, PAL and NTSC), superior graphics options (anti-alias, af, smoothen graphics) and easy to use (wizard installer), best emulator you just need to buy a gamepad for it which even the cheapest make can suffice.
