Quesion about the PS3...

Ok... lemme just say it as brief as possible...
What are the downsides of updating the PS3...
Stupid question, I know... it's just that i heard that the PS3 would occasionally hang once you update it... Anything i need to know? Pls reply, anyone...
Also, what's a good method for updating the PS3? direct DL, or DL it through the com and paste it in the PS3? Whenever I DL the update via direct DL through my PS3, it doesn't even get through %1 for a VERY long time... how big is the update anyway?
I know that this update is the only way for me to get into the PSN... Someone help me pls T_T.

best way for me is to DL from the computer and install with a usb. If i DL using the PS3 it usually takes 1 whole night

What are your internet specs? Cause the only time i do have to leave it on for the whole night is when i used to have a 1mb connection and now that i have 3 it takes hours but i think i did once or twice run it through a usb that i got off the comp. Most of those rumor things you heard about the ps3 fucking up on you from updates are the old ones like my 60gb one since it still has backwards compatability and i think some of the 80gbs fucked up as well but i honestly dont remember. Update sizes varies upon whats released anyway. Hopefully i helped ya out dude XD

what risk are you talking about? you don't want to update your ps3 then?
anyways yes the best way to do it is to just plug a usb into the comp and then load that into the system. for the life of me i dont see why it may take a night on the ps3 as opposed to an hour on the pc, but thats the way sony did it.
and if the risks you are talking about is viruses and stuff, chances are very low (since the ps3 is not a computer technically) and i dont think ppl sit around all day writing programs to infect ps3's. of course that actually doesnt stop them from getting in, so if you don't have anti-virus/spyware and any other removal tools on your pc then that's your fault.

I didn't mean viruses; they're the least of my worries. I was afraid of technical difficulties. Has anybody here updated their PS3 with no problem using the method of USB transfer and get no problems afterwords?

i doubt it, the only way i see it causing a technical problem is if the file was corrupt

Nothing, and I mean nothing will happen to your PS3 if you update. If something happens, Sony will patch up the problem right away.
Dude, you must have a slow ass connection them. It only takes me around 4-10 minutes for large updates.

Well, I've been leaning towards installing it anyway. But i'll have to install the update tomorrow since it's half past midnight right now here.
How long does the update install anyway? I've already got the update file in my PC. all I have to do is plug the file onto my console.
usual time?

depends on the size of the file, but installing is really fast anyway so just leave it on for a few minutes

Depend on the size of the update. The larger thy are, the longer it takes. Installing is quicker than downloading, so it's probably gonna be a lot faster for you.

I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure the problem you're experiencing is due to you either have Media Server or uPnP turned on. If you turn one or both of them off, your download should continue without problem. I used to have this problem too when I first got my PS3 and was trying to download a mandatory patch for a game but I googled it and got the solution to turn off the Media server and/or uPnP.
Hope this helps

Media Server is when you have your PS3 connected to your computer. It allows you to stream MP3's, videos, and photo's.
uPnP AV MediaServers = Universal Plug n Play. It's what allows the connection.
---
I've never had the hang ups or errors with upgrading the PS3. I just choose the "Upgrade System" button on the XMB and a few minutes later it's done.

lemme give the possible event...
I paste the update file in my USB, place it in folder UPDATE in folder PS3. i plug the USB on my PS3. I update my PS3 with the option Storage media. PS3 detects file. I confirm. I wait for the file to install. file finishes. Update complete. PSN accessible! challenge players using PSN. OWN players through PSN. Laugh.
... is this right?
AWWW... i just found out that I shouldn't update my PS3 via USB if I ever buy it OUTSIDE North America. I got mine from Kuwait, courtesy of my mom, and Te PS3 is currently here, in the Philippines. argh!
IS there a filipino with a PS3 updated to 3.01?
and...
Gulp... Does tekken 6 require the latest version to play?
and WILL I EVER GET MY CONSOLE UPDATED (getting paranoid)

if you want you can try bringing it to greenhills and someone there have a look at it, but i can't guarantee that you won't get robbed there while your carrying that ^___^

you just gave me an awesome idea. thanks. I might do that once I decide to update My console. Better have THEM check for me than regret it... and I don't think I've got a problem with getting robbed... and if you're talkin about the Greenbelt Rolex robbery thing, that's a different story.
speaking of which, how much do you think that'd cost me?... and do you think future games would require the update? (like my game uncharted, it needed to update, but I just disabled my connection to play it.) will there be games wherein I need the internet to? search for the update?
...I don't think that came out right... Here's what I mean...
What if my console is not updated, and isn't connected to the internet, will I be unable to play certain games?
