Oi... No fighting games -_- I only have one control anyway, so fun and awesome single player is what I'm looking for.

Yea well, I dun like playing fighting games by myself, feels pointless and is boring.

The .hack// series are pretty interesting, assuming you can handle the (admittedly decent) english voices.

If you haven't been spoilered already, the second half has some nasty surprises in store =)
Gameplay-wise, there are better games though... ToD is a bit antiquated, but hey it's more than ten years old already.

Don't know if it has been mentioned already but i'd recommend Drakengard by Cavia.

Anything from NISA, Gust, or Atlas sits well with me most of the times.
Rhapsody A Musical Adventure (It's on the PSX, but PS2 is backwards compatible and it is a must play)
Tales of Destiny (Also PSX, but too good to pass up)
Tales of Destiny II (PSX again, but this actually isn't a sequel to Destiny; It's a separate game that got renamed to avoid copyrights at the time. Anywhere else in the world it is known as Tales of Eternia)
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters
Atelier Iris Eternal Mana
Atelier Iris 2 Azoth of Destiny
Atelier Iris 3 Grand Phantasm
Mana Khemia Alchemists of Al-Revis
Mana Khemia 2 Fall of Alchemy
Makai Kingdom Chronicles of the Sacred Tome
Disgaea Hour of Darkness
Disgaea 2 Cursed Memories
La Pucelle Tactics
Tales of the Abyss
Rogue Galaxy
Persona 3 FES (Much cheaper than the original Persona 3 nowadays and has extra content)
Persona 4
Ar tonelico Melody of Elemia
Ar tonelico II Melody of Metafalica
The Bouncer
Star Ocean Till The End of Time
Radiata Stories
Dark Cloud 2 (I recommend you to not play the garbage that is Dark Cloud 1, the stories aren't connected)
Xenosaga Episode I Der Wille zur Macht (Translates to "The Wheel of Power" I believe)
Tales of Legendia (Low down on the list is this title, but it is still okay)
Those aren't in any particular order, except Tales of Legendia, they're all pretty much equally awesome JRPGs.

Everything by NIS America, Gust, and ATLUS. I'd also recommend Natsume for the times you just want zany fun, etc. (harvest moon, river king, chulip, etc)

Most things from Natsume in those terms aren't on the PS2. I'd also like to say that Natsume is the localization team and Marvelous Entertainment is the group that makes all the games themselves.
Big fan of the Harvest Moons and Rune Factory series myself, so that's how I know all this. :)
If you do have a DS or a Wii, I wholeheartedly recommend the Rune Factory series. It is literally Japanese RPG meets Harvest Moon game, a fantastically fresh twist on the series with some nice plots to boot. In case you don't know about Harvest Moon, the series is a farming simulation game where you also go about courting people from the local village.
