Only the original 60gb or 20gb have full PS2 hardware built in which they can play any PS2 game. Some early 80gb PS3s have half the PS2 hardware built in so those have less compatibility. See here: PS2 compatibility

Dont you have to get the older model PS3 with the chip to play PS2 games?I think the newer ones are not able to play PS2 games.
This on top of the PS2 games being region locked.If your PS3 is NTSC-J,that sucks as you are limited to play Jap games and most good PS2 games arent NTSC-J.Best to find NTSC-U.
I dont know about this x-ing thing,but I assume the PS2 game is on a thumb drive or something or like you bought the game from the PSN store?,not entirely sure of that.

Only the original "fat" ps3's can play ps2 games, the other are only ps1/ps3 compatible. The 20,60gb consoles were fully ps2 functional. while the 80gb could only play a select few ps2 games.

it would work as well as the newer PS3 with the exception of memory space and it being fatter lol.
Although a while back there was a 24 hour scare in which globally fat PS3's were unable to play games(which happened to mine as well) as the PS3 internal clock was messed up or something.It recovered the following day.
Anyway I reckon they be quite hard to find nowadays.
