Squaresoft + Enix = Fail?
The merging of the 2 companies, was it a bad thing?

When Squaresoft and Enix were 2 separate companies making various video games, I thought they were better off that way.
When I think of Enix, I think of Star ocean and Valkyrie profile.
When I think of Squaresoft, I think of the various FF titles (before the ps2), Parasite eve, Brave fencer Musashi, Chrono trigger...etc.
But ever since the 2 merged, I think the quality of the games being released have gone downhill. The 2 separate were capable of great rpg's! But together...
Final fantasy 12, for example, was horrible to me. Drakengard was......yea....no comment. About the only game I can think of right now that I enjoyed from them was Kingdom hearts 2...
What do you guys think?

Ehh? I thought Final fantasy 12 was pretty good. A different change in pace from the rest. All I had to do in FF12 was just run around with the analog stick. The gambit system made it so that I litteraly didn't have to press a single button. You set the attack pattern for all characters, use healing spells when HP drops below a certain percentage and I made it so that they casted haste....
That's all I was doing. Plus the lackluster story just made it even more boring.

Well, you got me there. I guess maybe it more entertaining when I was younger than if I played it now.

I guess they were a bit too focused on pushing the graphics that the other content suffered. They could have at least continued Vagrant Story or Parasite Eve for example.

yesh finally someone who has thought of the same.
ZOMG how could you forget Threads of fate man, that game was epic.Even though short.
Its funny how squareenix tried to make a sequel of bravefencer musashi but it was shit - -;;

I thought FFTA and Infinite Undiscovery were pretty bad games. I don't like how they butchered the system that worked with FFT and completely changed it. I haven't played many games Squarenix has since made because most the games they've developed haven't been very stellar. If they can gain my confidence by making some better games, I might turn back to them... But for now, I'm avoiding the company completely.

Oh yeah! That game was so nice! Bratty Princess FTW!
Another bad habit Squenix has is overhyping their flag title that fans tend to have a LOT of expectations.... only to get disappointed/unsatisfied in the end (Like how FFXIII is faring in Japan now).

I honestly don't think it would've made that much of a difference in game quality.. I can't blame the merger for anything, but as a whole, the quality has dropped, despite some gems still being released every once in a while. Crisis Core, Dissidia, TWEWY, KH2, FFTA2, to name a few.
Honestly, to me it seems like JRPGs as a whole are failing lately. You get a lot of games with a billion sequels (hello tales and NI srpgs), rather than taking time on development and making a true classic.

Naa it wasn't fail in my opinion. FF 10 was just amazing. FF 10-2 needs to be remade because the original is bad. Its like charlies angels

It's probably reaching breaking point. Once it breaks, hopefully something new and groundbreaking surfaces.

Hey! feel free too dis Square... but don't bring in The Tales series because you cant come up with anything else.. every Tales game has a different story in fact the only Tales games to carry sequels was the original Tales of Destiny for the ps1 and Tales of Symphonia for the gamecube.. Tales of Symphonia:dawn of the new world for the Wii. I have played them all and have never been dissatisfied with any of the Tales games.. so be careful what you lump with bad titles.. (Im all for a FF7 Remake!!)

I only liked 2 things from FF12: The redone old-school music and the playboy bunny race.
The main characters are just way too happy-go-lucky. I want some big Barret motherfucker to yell "FUCK THE PO-LICE" and randomly shoot his gun when he's pissed off. The voice acting is just terrible and unless they do something drastic I don't think I'll play another Final Fantasy again.
I really liked the old Super Nintendo ones because you had to use your imagination to picture how the characters looked and how their voices sound. FF7 had polygonal bodies so there was still a bit of imagination there and FF8's characters looked good though the plot was crazy. 9 was pretty much a re-hash of all the ones that came before and I thought it was alright. 10 comes along and first off I fucking hated the characters and could barely stand the voices. Also it was embarrassing to play if anyone was watching. I didn't play 11 but the characters looked weird as hell. I don't understand why all the characters have these crazy flashy outfits that nobody would dare wear out in public. The only thing I can think of is maybe the execs are spending way too much time walking up and down Akihabara and having their taste in clothes distorted.

Cool. They're good games. I don't have a problem with that.
I'm not dissing Namco or Square (Though your bias here in saying 'lol go ahead and talk shit about square' is hilarious), but simply commenting on the fact that there's so many games on the market it's a painful task to even remember and keep track of them, much less play all of them. It's not just Namco that's guilty of this... Atlus and NI came to mind as well. I see it the same as the big FPS boom.. There's just so many.
Sure, they set a high standard for good games, but how many of them break the status quo and truly become a really really incredible and memorial experience, above all others? Yeah, the next 'Tales of' game will be good, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for the next Chrono Trigger, or the next Final Fantasy VII, or the next Earthbound. Something TRULY breakthrough and incredible. Not just 'another good entry in the series'.

With games that square made (Brave fencer Musashi and Final fantasy 7) I enjoyed the storyline and everything they had and i would go to the very end. Now that they merged, ive been doubting what they can do and have been getting really bored of the games quicker, FF12 was brutal. the gambit system was stupid IMO because there was no skill needed at all and the voices just made the game even more retarded, If they had the choice to switch the voices over i would be much happier.
But not just that maybe something more to bring you in, Playing square games just had a good feel to it, but square enix it feels like they are just rushing it and just dont have what it takes.
I wish the FF series would go back to its original style of battles though, i liked that better than the run around stuff, in 12 I could run behind an enemy and still get hit even though i was not close, that was just stupid.
Also with the remake of Legendary Samurai Musashi that just didnt have the feel of the ps1 version which was far more superior.

I actually liked the new Musashi, but just because of the Character Designs, the arts and all that is graphics related. I TOTALLY like the idea of more girls in a game. :P
Spoiler:
Hated the somewhat retarded "Focus" ability and what makes it bad is also the "not-so-wide" adventure that they give to us.
well, yeah it seems after the merge, I noticed the downgrade of their games, and I'm not that excited anymore for their new games. >_>

As has been said, the JRPG industry as a whole hasn't been particularly good lately. They pretty much haven't tried a new idea in 10 years. You have the same cliche and poorly told stories with the same boring characters and the same basic gameplay with some tiny new twist to make it "innovative." FF12 was technically superb, but it wasn't a groundbreaking game. Valkyria Chronicles was also an excellent game that has a bit more character to it(and probably one of the best JRPG games in a while), but still not reshaping the landscape.
Honestly, BioWare is kicking the crap out of every JRPG publisher, consistently producing games that are pretty much better in every way: stories are better, more engaging gameplay, more customization and replay value, better voice acting.
SquareEnix has the clout and resources to put almost anything out there, so they could publish a game that actually breaks some conventions, but doubtless the financial risk makes it unappealing. After all, plenty of people bought FF12 and they will buy FF13, and until this is no longer true, what is going to compel SquareEnix to break from their formula?

square enix made some great games that weren't all that boring. im not gonna lie, the old final fantasy games were way better then the new ones but i never did like how in the old final fantasy games there was one set story and freerome was limited. i loved FFXll because theyre was so much going on and even when you finished the game there was still so much you could do.i would love to see games like final fantasy 7,8,and 9 remade with better graphics.i guess when it comes to graphics square enix was a good choice but when it comes to originality and gameplay squaresoft should have told enix "no".
