Squaresoft + Enix = Fail?
The merging of the 2 companies, was it a bad thing?

I noticed nowadays that all video games series no matter how obscure tend to fall to either fans or graphics.
Square enix: I actually liked Final Fantasy somewhat all to ten(Before I got into the SMT series) but then they started pumping out remakes, didn't like twelve and from I hear 13 is a interactive movie but I'll see it when it comes out.
TriAce: They started failing when they started remaking the star oceans in anime format complete with black and white characters and they also released the abomination that was star ocean 4 with the worst main character in existence Edge Maverick. I actually liked The original star oceans including 3(twist wasn't that bad) but then 4 killed me and I actually felt happy when they said 4 would be the last one.
At least they didn't mess Valkyrie profile up(yet)
Shin megami tensei series(Spinoffs): Seems Atlus is trying to please the fanbase that are fans of Japanese culture and are catering more to them than the symbolic and dark feel the series use to have and with the release of persona 4 the series seems to be setting itself to change.
Fallout: I'll admit I played three first before I played 1 and 2 and thought people who whined were just old fags but then I played both the originals which gave me insight into a real broken world filled with danger and actually customization that mattered(I made a low intelligence character in both games and my character was a retard). I didn't see none of that conservative propaganda, uncreative ways to solve the quests or any of the things that made fallout 3 not as good.

Not only Square-Enix RPGs but I don't really fall in love with more recent RPGs nowadays like the way I used to.
There are some fairly recent Square-Enix games that I like though, like VP2, Kingdom Hearts, & Front Mission 5 but I didn't like them as much as older RPGs.
I used to fall in love with the characters and I used to imagine myself to be in those games. I used to be able to play those games for hours and not get tired of it no matter how annoying the random battles get or no matter how many times I see the game over screen.
Like I said though, it's not only Square-Enix RPGs that I feel are not as good as older games. For example are the Suikoden and Wild Arms series. I didn't like much the Wild Arms games after WA3.

I even enjoy Legend of Mana and Sword of Mana, but I can't bring myself to even try anything released after those two...
Dawn of Mana was simply pathetic. Good thing I bought it cheap - played it for 2 hours, then dropped it like a hot potato.
Don't remind me. I shelled out $60 for it because I'm such a huge Mana fan. Even though I should have known better since nothing has been particularly good since Legend of Mana. Plus when I went to sell the game I somehow magically forgot to put the game disc back in the box, and never did get around to selling it. It's sitting up in my closet with the rest of my old games. I swear it is exuding an evil aura as I speak. The game is cursed and sentient. It didn't want to be sold. <.<

Speak of the devil... I got Wild Arms 5 coming with the mail anytime soon. I'll see how that game is, I can kinda see how the new battle system could turn into a lackluster...
I slightly disagree with your statement about Suikoden though, 4 was weak, but 5 was all the better IMO.
One series I found to be getting better with time is the Persona series... well I played the first Persona after 3 and 4, but since I like oldschool games even more, that should be in favor of Persona 1 (played the JP version, mind you) actually - and I found that basically everything got better. Characters, Story and most importantly, Gameplay. Well, Persona 3 and 4 introduced a bit too many J-Pop sensibilities, but other than that... I like where this series is going.

Ogre Battle was made by Quest. Square bought Quest and had those people work on FFTA 1 and 2.

Valkyrie profile 2 for some of the game was boring and directionless but at least the story picked up compared to Star ocean 4 where the story stayed dead.
Also to the one guy getting wild arms 5 in the mail unless you liked 4 expect to be somewhat disappointed with Dean and his adventures.

Hmmm... thing is, I only played 1-3 so far, skipped 4.
I'm not easy to disappoint though... And I'm a sucker for the Wild West/Hi-tech crossover setting, so I hope I'll come by somehow :D

I lost interest in the story of FF12 when there was a scene in which everyone started to pronounce the word Marquis as "Markwiss" Suddenly I had horrible Naruto anime "chalkra" flashbacks and didn't really care about the characters anymore after that.

Wild Arms 5 is not as bad as 4 though. It's actually quite good.
Just that there are not much lovable characters. And the main character is quite annoying.
I agree with you about Persona though.
Liked 3 & 4 more than the first games.
Actually, those games are one of my all time favorites now.

It's so nice to actually see other people that appreciate older games, and especially older RPGs compared to the new crap. However I have been interested in trying either Persona 3 or 4 and just haven't gotten around to it yet... I disappoint myself haha.

Nah, it's not that bad, but it just deviated way too much from the original game.
well, I still like the fact of more girls in the game. XD

Let's see, some of the things that I don't like:
-No absorb with Fusion, but you learn skills by using Focus
-It's not an "open field adventure" anymore.
-not a real time adventure anymore (I really loved the Vambee? chapter in BF musashi)
can't think of anything else right now.

Even thought FFXII was published by Square Enix I thought production on it began a year or two when they were still Squaresoft, unless im wrong.
Kingdom Hearts II was simple fun but FFXII never left a lasting impression on me.
Which is disappointing because Final Fantasy basically was all I played Of theirs. Dirge of Cerberus is pretty obviously riding on FFVII coattails' just like X-2 rode on FFX's.
Maybe the company needs Hironobu Sakaguchi back? But nonetheless im still looking foward to FFXIII. I don't think the merger is a complete failure but it doesn't look like they're using all the potential they could.

You can't really credit Squaresoft for the final product.
As for Sakaguchi, I doubt it. He's having fun with Mistwalker. Although I've got to say I'm disappointed in them. Lost Odyssey was great, and what the last few Final Fantasy games should have been. With the exception of Lost Odyssey however, I think they have been doing nothing productive. I mean come on, when Blue Dragon is the flagship of the company then there is something wrong.
Alright to be fair I don't own Blue Dragon and only played the demo, but really. Who all enjoys that game? You can't tell me more people enjoy Blue Dragon than Lost Odyssey. *shrugs*
They should have never canceled Cry On. ;_;
