Star Trek Online... and your favorite free "MMO"s...

Heh... being a Star Trek fan (but not fanboy enough to put on the uniform and fake ears), I was happy to find out a couple of weeks ago that the game was free. How free? All the content is open to you. You have some limitations, but you can get rid of most of them by either playing a total of 20 hours on your account or having a balance in the cash shop. Luckily for me Perfect World (the company that bought Cryptic, the creators of STO) sells cash cards, though the exchange rate sucks (1000 Zen = 800 Cpoints). Still, having a blast so far...
How did I find out about this? TV Tropes and a little research into "allegedly free games" which STO averts.
Speaking of free MMOs, which ones do you play that are free? Or say that they're free but not really?

Allods and Ragnarok, my country has an official public server that is f2p.
Though the f2p model in both games are more like payto win or it punishes people who don't buy from the cash shop, a lot of upgrades and enhancements can be bought in the item shop that is not available for sale in the game world (except for vendors of course).
I prefer the Guild wars kind of model (buy to play?), you just pay for the content you want and not much micro transactions. I suggest waiting for guild wars 2 to be released sometime this year and try out a demo of the game, it's going to be awesome.

I guess that's the way a lot of them work, some so much that they become "allegedly" free to play. Guild Wars sounds interesting, but I've been burnt out of fantasy MMOs for a long while (starting with WoW, where players get upset with you for thinking outside the box).
I guess that's what attracts me to STO (that and the fact that you can customize your characters and ships with quite a few options available). You can pay for content you want, but none of it is necessary to get through the game. But it's amazing how a lot of people buy the keys in the game that you use for opening the lock boxes you get as loot...

World of Tanks I guess.. Though I've taken advantage of the micro-transactions quite a bit.. The battles are still 15v15, but next patch is finally coming out with new game modes that ought to give some new scent to the game.
I guess I like it due to quite realistic depiction of the tanks and being skillful tanker usually gets you nice amount of kills and adrenaline in a heated engagement.
Waiting on Planetside 2 though as next free MMO. I never got the chance to play Planetside 1, so I'll be taking advantage of the #2 a lot.

Okay... I only just reread that Guild Wars thing... you pay for content? This wouldn't be the kind of game where you have to pay access to one place or another is it?
I wanted to play Planetside 1, but it wasn't free to play. In fact, it was $25 a month...
I've dropped about $80 into Star Trek Online myself, so I'm guilty of taking advantage of microtransactions. Then again, if I hadn't done that I wouldn't be flying some of the nicer looking ships. :)
I'm tempted to post a few pics later... maybe... :)

Oppai Overlord
I have played probably all the most popular free MMO's including Star Trek online. I have a bunch on my computer but I don't play them much anymore. The one I played the most was Dragon Nest. That's a good game. Other ones I have on my computer that I found good are
Sword 2, Grenada Espada, Sword of the New World
Rusty Hearts
Forsaken World
Vindictus
Mabinogi
Guild Wars (no monthly subscription even though you buy the game)
Aion (after it became free to play)
DC Universe Online
Star Trek Online
If you were to ask me I would tell you that the three best MMO companies are Nexon, Perfect World Entertainment and NCsoft. If your playing a game by them then you are most likely playing a good game

Rusty Hearts
Forsaken World
Vindictus
Mabinogi

Ugh... I have a lot of time on my hands and I'd rather stick to one MMO. And I've always favored Sci Fi over Fantasy. And if you say Perfect World has good MMOs to play I guess I should be glad they bought and now own Cryptic Studios.
Now I know DC Universe Online is free. That still won't make me want to play it though. But if I ever feel like putting on a cape and wearing my underwear backwards...

Okay... I guess I'll satisfy it this way...

I love being able to name the ships. Too bad the names only show up on Federation vessels... and I know some Touhou fans are probably going to shoot me for this...
