"#1: Shinken de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!"
Oh, look, another easily-influenced mind.
"It may be surprising to have a mostly-comedy VN as #1, but it really is just THAT DAMN GOOD."
No, it's not surprising; fap-happy material with generic character development and only stereotypical appeals ("Oh, I'm your childhood friend, I love you because you were there where others weren't." "Oh, I'm an iron-fisted, pretend-older-sister who dotes on you lovingly, but I want to keep my image around the others.") with a boring, dragging story.
Fan of Majikoi: "But the scenes are exciting, and the sex is hot."
Darzu: "...? *Ahem* Quote in Quote 'Oh, look, another easily-influenced mind.'"
Well, people do have different tastes I suppose. However, I do mean to offend those whom really dig that VN; all offense intended.

My only gripe with the list is:
Most if not all of them are "translated", so there's an obvious bias.
Fuck this shit...
Like he said:
Lol, no. The last thing I want to do is make a list based on my taste. XD
Asking for suggestions is a-okay.

Hmmm... kinda curious though, Kai. How many VNs do YOU think one should play before they can make an understandable list of their choice?
Also, did you listen to the songs I suggested?

Most of the Translated ones are good, but it's obvious that there are more that are currently untranslated.
If it was more specific like "Best translated, I won't comment it lol

Lol, not yet. been hanging there since I've downloaded it.

Lots of people in here sitting on high horses acting like their opinion regarding this matter is better than others, absolutely ridiculous.
You are all fans of visual novels, isn't that enough? Do you really feel the need to deem yourself on a higher level of knowledge regarding this matter just because he doesn't have visual novel X or Y on his list?
The list in question is fine, it's just suggestions, and there's no VN on there that's actually bad by any means.

"VN amateur"? Elitist much? And are you expecting Kaimax to give you a cookie if you suck on his nuts enough?
If it was more specific like "Best translated, I won't comment it lol
He said "This list has 10 visual novels that I think are worth giving a shot. I tried to cover as many possible story genres as I could.", nothing about the list being a best of the best kind of thing.
Obviously he's not gonna have any untranslated VN's in there, as he, and 99.9% of the people reading his article, probably don't know how to read jap, and thus would make those suggestion utterly pointless for the people wanting to try out a VN and actually knowing what's going on.
This came off sounding more like a rant than it was supposed to... but fuck it.

Having read 8 of the 10 (technically they are more) Visual Novels on that list I must say that I understand the reason of them being in there (they are very good) though I do not agree with it.
The title of that page, however, could be changed since it makes us assume that what is posted there is something objective when in reality, is not. As KLoWn said, who posted that list explicitly says that it's his own opinion, hence being subjective so I'll leave it at that. Each one is entitled to have their own opinion.
One thing that I must mention is the lenght that is posted. Man, if you can read Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru in 50 hours, I really don't know the speed that you read since I took more than 1 month to finish the series reading about 3 hours each day.

Now i'm also curious. Since there are good VNs that aren't translated which VNs that aren't translated will become popular when they get a english patch?
When Devil on G string was translated it was a big hit. Same with muv luv alternative.
Of the Non translated VNs you read which other ones will be that big?

Basically, almost all VN that are translated get popular since there are lot of fans that don't know japanese.
Now a few good examples for what you're talking about are:
Baldr Sky: Dive 1 “Lost Memory” and Baldr Sky: Dive 2 “Recordare”
Soukou Akki Muramasa
Subarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~
Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai - Under the Innocent Sky.
I would recommend you to do some research about Visual Novels.
Remember that when we (english players) get to read a translated VN, that VN was already played by lots of other people that understand the original language so we're always behind the times in this regard. Also, because of that we don't have any right to judge if a VN is good or bad because it's not translated. There are a lot of masterpieces out there that are not translated.

clannad should be 2or 1, tying wih muv-luv. I've played every vn on that list. majikoi is one of my favorite vns, but it certainly does not deserve anumber 1 spot. I'd say the top 10 on vndb is more accurate

Lol, amorim's 1st and 2nd VN recommendations are exactly the same as mine. I could not think of any VN that could beat Baldr Sky's wonderful harmony of gameplay and story, where as Muramasa pushes anti-heroism (That's the term I think) and epicness beyond levels I could imagine. To provide an example (spoiler):
EDIT: And in my opinion Koi Shinasai isn't exactly as bad as people think (One of my top 20s, since there are SO MANY). Compared to VNs of equal genre it was written very thoroughly, no individual routes shared the same story, and has an amazingly wide range of competitions (That's probably the best thing about this VN) and mindgames. Recently VNs features incompetent writing, is boring, lazily written (I could just see them writing shit just to appease their superiors due to lack of time or motivation), and basically just horrible. Even the pure eroge VNs are getting worse.

This is what I was getting at. The thing is that no matter what I see at VNDB I can't tell which VN is the next muv-luv with out asking the opinion of someone that has read them.
The Vn scene here for english speakers is different than JP simply because may top contenders aren't knowen about. It's going to be interesting how it changes as more good VN's get translated.

That's one of the reasons I said that it would be better for you to research about Visual Novels. As you should know, the vast majority of the VNDB community doesn't know japanese so untranslated games aren't that well known. However, there are always other ways for you to have more information about them.
Just because you don't know japanese, that doesn't mean that you can't know if when a specific Visual Novel gets translated, it won't be one of the best rated in VNDB for example.

Well, there's a simple but "not guaranteed way" to check (guess).
Using the search in VNDB, just search for Original Language Japanese, and then sort it by the ratings from highest to lowest. An then just looking at the ones that doesn't have a English version/patch.
By doing this, you can actually kinda pin-point which one is popular with Japanese Readers.
For example, in this first page I got:
-Clannad (Still not translated lol)
-Baldr Sky "Lost Memory" and "Recordare"
-Soukou Akki Muramasa
-Subarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~
-Aiyoku no Eustia
-ef - a fairy tale of the two.
-Kamidori Alchemy Meister
-Ikusa Megami Zero
-Rewrite
-Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai! S
-Coμ - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku -
-Monmusu Quest! Chuushou ~Makereba Youjo ni Okasareru~
-Twinkle ☆ Crusaders
-Seinarukana -The Spirit of Eternity Sword 2-
-Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai - Under the Innocent Sky.
-Grisaia no Kajitsu
-Eden* They Were Only Two, On The Planet
----------------
Despite the small numbers of voters, this still reflects some truth about the quality of that "untranslated VN".

I always try and look for reviews of good untranslated VNs. I usually end up downloading them and attempting them with AGTH+Atlus... only to give up rather quickly cause I can't stand the painful Engrish. I am currently taking a Japanese course at my university, but my proficiency is far from being good enough to play a VN.

Eventhough I can "understand" them, I suck at grammar. That's why I don't join translation groups.
