Trends in Video Games that Suck Shit

LENGTH!!!My problem is that games are getting shorter and shorter! And then they have no replay value! It just seems like a waste of money when I bought Left 4 Dead 2, and finished it in a few hours...
Even if the zombies regenerate in random places, the replay value of that game is only good when you have friends over.
Plus, once I beat a game, I usually move on to something else. So I feel cheated when Im done with the game after 4 hours...
101
Then you completely missed the point of the Left 4 Dead series...
It's a multiplayer game not something you solo, you miss out on all the great moments that happen with your mates around such as that smoker than always seems to spawn behind the guy lagging behind...
Left 4 Dead's length is perfectly fine try playing it on expert and it's much much harder.
Anyway my two cents on gaming.
DRM:
First and foremost the scourge of gaming I don't mind the old disk checks of old at least that wasn't intrusive.
But being hooked up to the internet 24/7 to be able to play a game? Give me a break, although most of us have the luxury of leaving the internet on 24/7 not everyone can or wants to.
Also what happens when your connection is down what happens to your games being unable to play without it's life support system.
Limited Installations:
Related to DRM one of the worst forms of DRM in existence.
As a person who periodically changes his hardware and updates his computer what happens when I hit that maximum number some time in the future and the company no longer exists for me to call and get more activations?
If you want the users to be hooked to the internet like it's their life support system at least let them be able to install the game many times.
Anti-Modding:
Like what IW.Net has done with MW2 they've basicly capped MW2's potential preventing keen modders from releasing maps for the game.
There would probably be a lot more maps for MW2 by now if IW.Net had let people mod the game.
IW.Net has basicly put a 'used by' date on the game controlling wither or not to release content or just force the users to buy a new game to continue playing.
Dumbing Down of Games:
I've seen too many games specially for PC being affected by this trend in gaming.
Developers are over simplifying games short of putting the "I Win!" button have made games overly simple to play. Of course there are games that specialise in that area, so that you can pass that 15 min wait at the bus stop .
But I digress my point is games have lost that complexity to somewhat challenge the mind just a bit but in a fun way.
Today's generation of gamers are mostly after instant gratification and it's a sad trend, eventually we'll have devs just put in the button to skip the plot altogether and show what the end is.
Anyway that's the end of my rant.

Quick Time Events
I'm not saying that QTE is a bad thing all the time but most of the time it's inappropriate. It's like the game is stuck between letting the player play the game and letting the player view a cinematic. In games like DMC and Bayonetta I believe the QTEs have been used poorly against bosses *especially the last boss* making the game boring compared to using your own skills in combining combos rather than pressing buttons appearing on the screen. This is extensively true in the game WET which I am still in a trance as of why I bought such a poor quality game where the final boss is just a massive amount of QTEs.
Of course there are some games that are quite compatible with this feature. Heavyrain makes good use of QTE making it not only a gimmick but an essential of the game on its own. God of War uses it in a refined manner that gives class and finess to finishing moves (even with QTEs in GoW it doesn't necessarily downgrade the battles or make it easier since they are more of finishing moves). Bioshock 2 which I have recently finished change the way of hacking from a stupid game of plumbing into small QTE strokes and apparently it improved the game.
War Games
It's not bad but of recently alot of this started coming out like mushrooms on a rainyseason. Army of Two, Oblivion, Far Cry, Far Cry 2, Modern Warfare Series, Velvet Assasin, Valkyria Chronicles etc. these are just some of the many examples of war games that were released the past year. Of course not all of them are bad in fact two of my favourites are there namely MW2 and Valkyria Chronicles. I'm just saying is that some games come out that have nothing new to offer and just add sand on to the now weakening flame on the candle of creativity that makes this genre. In short it's becoming saturated. Example would be Wolfenstein (the new wolfenstein since there was a wolfenstein before for the NES but apparently the creators of the new wolfenstein are too bigheaded to call this idea their own) is a war game that we've all seen before that just added a bunch of mythical creatures in the frey.
God of War Clones
Basing a game and borrowing some elements from another game is all good. But if a game is going to do that they should at least knock the other game off completely to at least make a mark in the gaming industry. God of War was not the first of its kind in fact it was DMC that started this trend. However most would say that GOW set the benchmark because it added style and class rather than just button mashing. Games today have copied from its gameplay but failed to make use of it entirely thus just making a failed clone. Darksiders for one was like God of War in a sense that it had the same supernatural concept but it didn't rip off its gameplay. Well in somesense I wish it did at least God of War had a decent set of combos in its arsenal. Dante's Inferno is a total GoW clone which failed to eclipse it completely. Graphically they are equal which is a big problem since God of War 2 is a ps2 game and DI is in the PS3 a more powerful console.
Wii Games
Well I know I might get some people pissed at me for even putting this up but yes I think I will. Although Wii's innovation is truly a huge breakthrough in the gaming world it's very unimmersive. Sometimes it takes 5s of wagging the goddamned thing before it responds!
Remember in a zombie movie where the last guy in the group always gets caught by the zombies and gets dragged back then have his nipples bitten off? Well in our consoles line up today Nintendo is that guy. But instead of zombies they are dragged back by little children, old housewives and retarded fanatics and shower them with ridiculous amounts of money that they can no longer stand up and moveon. The XBox would be the heroine that shouts "NINTENDO NOOO!" while Sony drags her to safety inside a mall saying "He's gone! Forget it!". Then the two reaches the top of the mall and throws Guitar Hero items on the crowd to distract them.
The problem is nintendo has turned from hardcore gaming into casual gaming making games like wii sports, sonic games and other kiddy stuff consequently over the months. Now I'm not saying that Wii hasn't released anything hardcore this past few years I'm just pointing out the route they have seemed to take taking what they have released this past months. Most of their games are only accepted by the public thanks to nostalgia (i.e. Sonic Unleashed). For me the wii's era has finished and game designers should start making room for the next innovation maybe something like cyberspace.

I think it's the opposite, really.
They get longer and longer... not sure if I like it, though. 40 hours is perfect rpg length to me (average Tales series length), but some games really drag, like Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy in general, Valkyrie Profile 2 and Tales of the Abyss (at least on the first playthrough)

I actually like them to be long and with plenty of extras. You know a game is good when you reach 150+ hours and the game still keeps on providing some good fun.

Don't get me wrong there - I like my games long too, but more on the "replay value" side. What good is a game if you can't bring yourself to playing it after beating it once?
Like Katamari Damacy, that game is like 5 hours long but I can play it over and over and over again, haha...

Well, katamari damacy has a high replay value because it doesn't have stats or anything of the sorts that rpgs have. So the better you know how to play it, the better you'll do, even on the first levels.
And rpgs aren't like that. Replaying most of them involves resetting your stats and rewatching the story over again (some let you start a new game+ while mantaining your stats). And in my opinion, keeping on going and going (minigames, other challenges, collecting) can be much more fun than restarting the game.
ps: Fuck yeah, katamari. Random question: have you picked up the king and queen on the last level of we love katamari?

Got a point there. Although I mostly play games with some kind of New Game+ content (Tales series, Persona series, etc)
Sadly, I haven't had the chance to play We love Katamari yet. I'm always broke (but I just saw that game for a real bargain price at play-asia, so I'm tempted to pick it up)

I hate console multiplayer, unless its local or fighters. (The death of local MP! Lets even be more losers and unsocial) Sorry but Live or PSN is not a social experience, it's a lost of brain cells. If i want MP its PC > Console anyday.
I agree with you in so much as the local multiplayer experience is superior to the online one. Bringing in the element of worldwide competition has introduced a level of elitism, competition and a ridiculous standard of play where playing MW2, for instance, is more about winning and kd/r than it is about having fun. And what ever happened to bots? There was literally nothing better than playing a slightly rubbish fps with a friend, late at night, defeating swarms of bots; equally adding bots to spice up an otherwise unbalanced match. Now you either have games like Halo (don't bring in ODST) where multiplayer is awful with anything less than four people, or games like Gears which have entirely non-customisable modes.
I'm not so sure about the age-old adage that PC > console, though. For me, the fact that everyone is using pretty much identical equipment, and the virtually non-existent capacity for macros, hacks, optimisation etcetera makes it a far more level and more accessible playing field. inb4 'you suck at PC multiplayer' :P

Graphics over gameplay.No.No. No. No. NO!! Graphics does not equal a good fucking game. Developers need this beat into their heads. Graphics should just be the icing on top. Make the fucking game based on gameplay first, then worry about graphics. I'll always choose a shitty looking but good game from older generation than a flashy looking piece of shit.
Shitty sequels.
Ok. If you're going to make a sequel. Make sure its GOOD. Don't just make a sequel just to fucking cash in on the success of the first game. That is what kills games.
Story.
Don't fucking skimp out on a story. A story can be what makes a game good or fucking amazing. Spend some time developing the story. I do not want to be just given some lame ass excuse to pushed to the next part of the game. Give me a reason to fucking care about what I'm doing. Case in point, Killzone 2/Modern Warfare 2. What the fuck? The story in Killzone 2 was bullshit. It told you next to nothing and just literally told you to do shit. Modern Warfare 2 needs no explanation.
On the re-hashing of games, HeartGold and SoulSilver are such brilliant cases in point. I've just beaten the third gym and caught Sudowoodu, and I've not yet gotten the spark of nostalgic joy that I was honestly expecting. In the way it's been updated it retains a vague and unimpressive familiarity; it is Diamond/Pearl with a ten year-old layout. I know it essentially is, but it feels way too much like a new game with a tired storyline. You look at the 3D Ho-Oh in the menu and wonder why they couldn't have gone down that route. Even a Pokemon Stadium for the DS would be amazing; I mean, imagine the multiplayer.
The prevalence of technological enhancements over story and gameplay is a no-brainer; really, I can't understand why it ever trips reviewers (or anyone else) up. When I play a pretty game it immediately strikes me as being pretty, and I write that down in my notes for reviewing it, but that should be the first bullet point of maybe 50 over X ridiculous amount of hours of gameplay. How can you fail to recognise the other flaws and merits of a game as anything but the bulk of a review? I mean, Perfect Dark Zero looked amazing when the 360 launched, of course it did, and everyone gave it great scores pretty much for that. I couldn't believe how piss-poor a game it was when I actually played it.

Watch me suddenly become everyone's enemy number one...My most hated trend, or maybe second after the graphics over gameplay problem, is the tendency to value multiplayer over single player. I do not have a bunch of people ready to play with me at all times. In fact, most people I know don't even like the same games I like, or just don't have the money to buy everything. Usually I let this slide since I'm not really interested in most games that do this, anyway. But the next Pokemon Ranger game really managed to piss me off with this point again. I don't care too much about that line either, actually, just playing them to get the Pokemon you can transfer to other games, but one of these needing a multiplayer-only mission? I know exactly one other person with a DS, and that's my sister. And she does quite definitely not have the money for that, being a typical poor university student.
I am not alone!
I hate multiplayer. From the moment I started playing video games, I've played them alone, and I've always liked it that way. I don't like relying on other people to accomplish something.
This general focus on multiplayer over singleplayer does annoy me as well. Multiplayer demonstrates a skilfully constructed game engine; singleplayer demonstrates a skilfully constructed game. Fair enough, it's hard to keep a campaign fresh and give it genuine twists now, but if you have an idea for a game which is of any substance you should be able to work a story around it, and thus construct something to entertain. Similarly it annoys me when people say they haven't played the campaign of a game yet because they went straight into the multiplayer. What was the point in buying the game then? To grind out some respectable stats with your mates? The multiplayer should be a fun sideshow once you've enjoyed the lonely slog through a campaign, surrounded by food and a blaring sound system. Multiplayer alone does not constitute a gaming experience.

Indeed, although I think most of the complaints are about the third-parties, which Nintendo is partially responsible for "inviting" them in.

You must have been playing a very shitty game, or the batteries are nearly dead, or you are too close/far away from the sensor, or you just suck at it (even if you are exaggerating).Nonetheless the console has a tendency to fuck up. If players have to tire themselves to adjust to the distance to the sensor then it's nto really a helpful design. Besides Nintendo released a mother fucking wii motion plus meaning that it had a problem. Thanks to the motion plus the console can finally DO WHAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO DO THREE YEARS AGO but nonetheless I have grown tired to even buy that and just gave up on the damn thing... As for your "you just suck at it" comment: I admit that I am not good at wii but I like to think that I speak for everyone and considering that I have been gaming for most of my life so I'm quite sure average people are quite worse than me and that's a scary thought.

You do know that Sonic is Sega's rockstar to rival Nintendo's Mario right? He was an icon that brought tons of money to the company but now his shows can only be watched by grand old dads who can only sigh in disbelief as the lumbering blue idiot embarrass himself with his fucked up line up of games. Even though it's true that some consoles adopted sonic games it's also true that Sonic stays mainly in the wii bandwagon along with mario and zelda. Also what you said was a Post Hoc when did I ever say that Wii is a shitty console because of sonic games? In fact when ever did I say that it's a shitty console? Even though some consoles adopt sonic games they don't stay on one linear line up just to sell stuff. Nintendo however continues making new games for their Marios, Zeldas and Sonics because they think in that beating a dead horse its vibrations will be enough to support their company. If you read the title of that part it's WII GAMES not the WII CONSOLE. My only rant about the console is how unimmersive their motion sensor can go other than that I didn't say anything about it being shit. Maybe it's you who think that, maybe you're not really having as much fun as you want to convince yourself you're having and you need excuses such us this one *someone calling it a shit console* to make yourself feel better.
As for the kiddy stuff I don't even get what you're getting to or if you even meant something.

I'm sorry, did you just refer to Unleashed as "nostalgic"? The one with the Werehog? Seriously?Understand the god damned statement better before you make a comment. Sonic is done. He's finished and the the only reason his games are still bought is thanks to nostalgia. Is it not only thanks to his fanboys who still cling to that last strand of his blue fur that he's still even accepted? I bought the game Unleashed before because I was so frustrated in real life that I needed a bad game to rant on. I was disappointed when I played it though because it was so god damned bad that I can't even get worked up about it just like the other previous recent sonic games. The only way I could enjoy the game was imagine that Sonic was in a red skirt so he would look like Kratos from God of War a much better game.
While we're in the topic, I could say the same for Mario. If you're a person who have not played Mario since the first time it was released would you buy his games in the first glance? Because I wouldn't... The only reason I still even cared about it was again because of nostalgia otherwise I could say that Mario is one of the least interesting characters of gaming in my list.

The flame of their creativity has died and the new games they released just poured sand on the last few remaining sparks.

RPGs getting shorter, Stories for ALL game Genres being dumbed down, older games getting Re-Released past their prime it's seems like the whole world of gaming is going to hell but this is just my opinion.

Alright. Let us get all the rage out. What are some stupid trends in video games that just piss/annoy the fuck out of you?
Unskippable cutscenes.
Fuck this shit. I do not want to see the same damn cutscene over and over again if I'm replaying a game. Case in point. Mass Effect 2. I played the shit out of that game and I was fucking sick of that beginning and the segments with Illusive Man. All fucking cutscenes should be skippable. But just make the button out of the way so that the player doesn't accidentally press it and skip it.
Shit voice acting/stupid cheesy lines.
Another big one. Make sure your fucking characters should sound like they should. And don't write lines that are dumb. It makes the characters look stupid and pulls gamers away from the game.
I totally agree with you, i guess in some games the voice/translation really sucks, i guess some fans like me will really appreciate if they leave the voices in japanese with english sub only cause most everytime the english voices are not good to the characters, in this case Final Fabtasy XIII and many other games.
Unskippable cutscenes, this is a very pain in the ass, sometimes you got hurry you gotta leave immediately when you are playin and the stupid game wont let you skip the scene.

May not be THAT much ontopic, but I always wondered why games don't give explanations for why monsters exist in the first place (especially RPGs).
Yeah, makes real sense that they just live in the wilderness like your average animal.
The only games (right off the top of my head) that explained the existence of monsters was the Persona series.

Plotholes, my friend. They're everywhere. And surprisingly, persona has done the best job at covering them up from all the games i've played.

is it really that immersion-breaking that fantasy games with magic and crap don't explain why there are monsters?

Most RPGs especially JRPGs have their game situated in a different dimension from our own so they have a different variety of creatures there from our own. Not explaining it meaning they have been there from the very beginning similar to how we always had reptiles, birds and mammals without a clear explanation.
As for the persona series, since the setting of the series is a clone of our world they had to make an explanation to what changed their world into something different from our own.
But yes I agree, it's always nice to have explanations on how problems arose including monsters and stuff.

Many years have passed since the start of gaming and I doubt it's going to be easy to think of something original since alot has already been tried even motion sensors which was the past's dream is now the annoyance of the current *at least mine*.
