^ 6 ways that a console owner can shorter his/her console's lifespan. I found this information to be useful, since I never known a carpet can destroy my Xbox. Good thing I keep my room clean as much as possible.

I call BS on the mods part. Totally does NOT kill your console if done right.
Yeah, you can fuck up with the soldering and stuff, but the actual mod, once done, is NOT KILLING CONSOLES.
If you use cheap CDs and DVDs to pirate stuff though, that may damage your laser.

I found this useful, dust is a big problem where i live, and I dont have my console plugged in to a surge protector, Thanks lulu

Unfortunately dust and heat is a big issue in my house. Dust because I'm lazy and never keep my room dust free and not having carpet that traps dust doesn't help either. Heat because it's hot and humid in the summer and I don't have AC, nevertheless a dehumidifier.
That said, if all six of those (well maybe not the modification one, that's bullshit) aren't common sense to a gamer then they need to GTFO.

I keep all my consoles above floor level, beside my TV, so no dust gets in, I wipe the area off regularly and Never mod any of my systems unless I have a spare one to kill.
I find by Modding you do in fact shorten its life, By modding an old school PS1, Its life span was shortened and It soon short circuit about a few years after.
Whoever actually throws their controller is a complete idiot, Why waste Your good money on having to buy a new one?
But I should watch for the time I keep my ps3 on, I do know it does strain it but eventually karma will catch up and will bite me in the end.
All 6 are to be reminded and I preach people when i see one collecting dust.
Thanks Luluu.

so the xbox..can brake from dust?Heat kills electronics. Dust impeeds airflow and gets into places you wouldn't believe and causes a myriad problems with electronics. With simpler electronics heat isn't as big an issue because they don't generate much heat, but with advanced electronics with more and more circuits crammed into a tighter and tighter space heat becomes a bigger issue.
There's a reason people have been known to burn themselves on laptops.
The heat and dust information on that link isn't really new, and it's something people should have already learned (You wouldn't cram your PC in an entertainment center and stack it atop 5 other running PCs, would you? So why do that with a computer focused for gaming?) but we're all still in the habit of treating video game systems the same way we treated our VCRs back in the 80's. :)

Ha, I like how Demon's Souls was referred to as the "frustrating game"
Some of these are pretty common sense if you've had experience with machines like these before.

it's more because of the quality of that said Disc, if the Optic eye keeps reading from normal CDs & DVDs, it will strain it self, and then weaken it's laser reading capabilities sooner or later.
Modding, won't break your consoles, go ask my PSX and PS2 that you can still play it, if you don't believe it. The only thing that will get damaged is the Optic.
I even asked my modder to give it an extra IC to spread the heat evenly so that my Optic won't get the 100% strain from trying to read Pirated DVDs.

As Kai said, it depends on the quality of the disc. Every disc will strain your laser, but cheap ones tend to do this even more (there are some CD&DVD brands the modding community especially recommends for these purposes, like TDK, but since I never pirate any games, I don't know too much about this).
By the way, I have a modded PS2 that I bought and modded... what, 5 years ago? Still works fine, I think the laser arm needs a small readjustment, but getting modded certainly didn't kill it.
Oh, and I once had a Gamecube that my bro tried to mod. Fucked up horribly, but Gamecube still worked.

Ah, yes the straining does make sense.
I've also modded (sorta, it's swap magic) my ps2 about 5 years ago and it's still going good. Regarding the TDK DVDs, my playstation cannot read those. No idea why, but they're uncompatible. I found SONYs to be the best (even though they're a little expensive), and recently i've been using Mitsai and they're pretty okay.

Hilarious. This gotta be like the console nerd version of FAN DEATH.

Verbatims work well for the 360 (since they're dual layer)
Thought I'd go ahead and throw that into the discussion.

@topic:
Useful, but already known by me info, I know all the pre-cautions of how to take care of a 360 <that's why it's been with me for 4 yrs.
Oh btw, there is one bit of really important info left out (both for PS3 and 360 owners).
Don't put your console in the standing position.
