First things first, yes, this is obviously a "GTA clone". But I believe this is one the few rare ones that actually do it right. This is easily one of the best movie-to-video game adaptations ever.
Main reason being, much like the video game of The thing, the Scarface movie has been around for decades. Thus, this was not just another cheap cash-in and rushed game to make the deadline for when the movie comes out in theatres. No, Sierra (I think was the developper, not sure) had plenty of time to make the game right.
There are a few things that Scarface, in my view, did better then GTA. And of course, there are few bad things about the game
---Things Scarface did better then GTA:[/h]
-You could call up your driver at anytime to tell you to bring one of your cars to your location[/h]. No need to steal a shitty car or wait for a fast sports car to randomly generate, no, you can have one of your own cars brought to you in a matter of seconds. Not only will your henchmen bring you your car, he'll also put all the weapons you have in the trunk so you can switch inventory if you want.
-Refill ammo on demand[/h]. Whip out your cellphone, call your ammo provider, and voila! Fully stocked on any/all guns you wish
-Music at will[/h]. The music of the game consists of 80's tunes and of course, all songs from the Scarface movie make their appearance here. What's really nice is, with one push of the select button, you could toggle on/off the music. No need to be in a car if you want to hear a song, you can listen to any track you want at anytime, or not. All with the push of a button.
-Targeting system[/h]. The targeting system of Scarface is really awesome, you lock-on to an enemy and with the right analog stick you can easily aim for the knees, arms or better yet, the head. The result will be a nice, bloody decapitation we've come to love.
-Buying things[/h]. Purchasing items and/or unlockables is all done via the menu. You've got a catalog of sorts and you can choose to buy cars, boats, planes, a limousine, more songs to listen to in the game, even bribing the cops to "look the other way" when you're...taking care of busyness. ;)
-Rage system[/h]. Temporarily become immune to gunfire and restore your health by killing fucking cockroaches your enemies. You can unlock the rage system by filling up the "balls meter". Yup, the balls meter. You get ball points by driving in the opposite lane, "near miss" cars, executing fucking cockroaches killing your enemies, successfully pulling off drug deals, etc..etc.. Just watch any gameplay video on Youtube if you want to learn more.
-The wanted level[/h]. It's both good and bad in this game. Basically, the meter fills up the more you do crimes, and more cops will be after you. You don't have "stars" in this game, you have to evade the police in order to gradually lose your wanted level.
-Intimidate the cops[/h]. If done successfully, will instantly clear your wanted level. If you fail, you're automatically busted. You will lose all drugs you have on you and I believe all the money you have on you as well.
-The money system in this game[/h]. You've got the money on you, and the money in the bank. The money on you can be lost if you die/get busted. The money in the bank is safe. It's permanently there until you spend it on more drugs, cars, ammo, etc... You can deposit money at anytime you wish at banks marked on the map. Doing so will also save your game (if you want). Early on in the game, the bank will take a percentage off of you for every deposit, but later on you can purchase an unlockable which will remove this.
---Areas where Scarface the game fails[/h]
-The main way of making money in this game[/h]. Sell yeyo. And that obviously gets repetitive. While your progress through the game you can get larger quantities of yeyo, and the larger the quantitym the more difficult it is to sell it without getting busted by the cops. You do get a little money by killing off bad guys but it's nowhere near enough to purchase things in this game.
-No random killing spree[/h]. Unlike the GTA franchise, you cannot randomly kill civilians walking the streets. You can run them over, but you can't shoot them. "It's against my code", "I only kill people who have it coming to them", Tony says, when you try. While it does stay true to how Tony acts in the movie, it's just stupid for us who simply want to kill people. :/
-No motorcycles in the game[/h]. What the fuck Sierra? The GTA franchise introduced motorcycles back in Vice city. This game was made 2005~2006, several years after, and no motorcycles? Wtf, seriously...
-Your properties will get attacked[/h]. And sadly, no matter how much security you pay, the A.I. will be too dumb to successfully defend it on their own. That means you'll be forced to go to the property that's being attacked in order to kill off the offenders. If you don't, the property will be wrecked and you'll have to pay in order to get it fixed. This slows down the pace of the game and can be a frustrating factor when you're trying to attend other busyness or progress the story of the game.
Despite these few, yet noticeable flaws, Scarface the game remains (imo) a must play for any/all fans of the movie. They (the creators of the game) did a wonderful job of creating a "what if Tony lived" scenario, and delivering the very satisfying (and obvious) ultimatum.

Quite an impressive thread Thanks.

for an unpopular game.Hmm...I think I may know why that is. The timing of when it was released, when the market was hit by terrible GTA clones and of course, San Andreas being at the top of it all, Rockstar laughing at the competition. The game came out when the 360 was making or about to be released I think? That most likely didn't help sales either. People probably figured "I got San Andreas and a new system's coming out soon, no need for this game".
