What is the best VN (visual novel) to introduce to a newb?
0
I have been seeing a lot of animes being adapted primarily from visual novels these days, and surprisingly, people who watch anime don't know what the hell a visual novel is, and they do not know the anime they have seen have been adapted from a VN. As of now, I am still a novice in the VN world, and have only started on playing a couple, and I will say, I love VNs! I was thinking from what to introduce a newb to a VN is to show them a memorable and excellent one!

I think there is not just one single best visual novel which can be used to introduce newbs into the visual novel world and get them hooked up on it.
In my opinion it's more effective to give beginners a visual novel from an anime they liked (if avaiable), like Tsukhime, Fate Stay Night, Shuffle, Da Capo, Umineko, Higurashi etc...It does not have to be one of the best visual novels out there, since beginners don't have any basis to compare that visual novel with others, but in most cases if the visual novel is not all too bad it keeps them motivated until the end to play out different routes and moreover see their favorite characters from the anime in a different medium.
Otherwise it's always good to go with the top lists ( like from here or from vndb) and select the best one among of them which fits to the genres the person likes the most.

Alot of people the people who had G-Senjou no Mao as their first VN experience seems to walk away from it more than pleased.
Sengoku Rance might be a good choice too, even though it's more strategy than reading in it (not a bad thing).

Of course it really depends on the person's tastes.
Action/Adventure : G-Senjou or F/SN
Comedy: Kira*Kira
Gameplay: Utawarerumono or Daibanchou
I'd shy away from Rance because that's liable to leave a really bad taste for many many people.

Honestly play the laid back ones, or since they watched the anime, why not try making them play the Original VN, like shuffle for example. The anime pretty much fucked up Kaede.

I would suggest Clannad
Also I agree with G-senjou no maou and Kira*Kira.
Of course if there's anime they really like made of VN they should try that VN. In my case I really liked Shuffle! so I played Shuffle! VN first and it was awesome for me.

My first one was Wanko to Kurasou, mainly cause it decorated the first page, which actually was quite a good one. I would also propose tsukihime, though maybe the art will initially put off a "newb" as you called it. But the Devil on the G-string one would be a great VN to start off with, but as it really shows off what a VN is capable and is rather modern, may leave you initially a tad disappointed when playing the old VNs later on. I remember when I first start reading VNs, that everything was something everybody had already read a long time ago, so it might not be that bad idea to look at the recently released translated ones.
I would advise against Daibanchou though - for a beginner, its a quite a hard game (spoken from experience, so no patronising there).
and if you are already playing a few, check out this topic - https://www.fakku.net/viewtopic.php?t=21723 - its great for generating ideas for VNs to play next, but beware the list goes on and on and on and computers only have so much memory and days only have so many hours in a day.

You should start off with the easier ones. I agree with Kaimax about shuffle, that should be a good start.

personallly i think a lot of you are missing a key phrase of the question..."NEWB" .
if we start a newb out with the best vn's we know then when they run into all the lower quality VN's they'll be so dissapointed that they might not give 'em the chance they deserve. I think you should start with an average quality Vn an have work their way up.. on that note i'd agree with "Ninja4Hire", and "lastmousestanding", wanko to kurasou would be a great starter VN its not all H-scenes like some low bugets/quality but its not so focused on the plot you have to take a break to browse fakkus latest releases just so you can fap. thats just my OP though.

Utawarerumono, G-senjou no Maou and Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo are all very good titles to start on.
Fate/Stay Night, Shuffle and the first MuvLuv make for a good alternative too.

I would recommend Yume Miru Kusuri because of the following:
-Time
Compared to more lengthy games like Fate, each route is short. There are only 3 routes, so completing the whole game is not viewed as daunting for a beginner.
-Legal Concerns
The game is legally translated and sold by JAST USA. If a beginner doesn't like the idea of piracy (which is an issue for some people) YMK is a honest-to-goodness legally obtainable game.
-H Factor
Personally, I think it has a good balance between plot and sexual content. It isn't an outright sex-romp nor do you have to wait until near the end of the game for some lovin'. Of course this all depends if the beginner just wants to fap or enjoy a story that happens to have sexual content.
It was one of my first VNs and I loved the heck out of it. I highly recommend it as a 'newb's first VN'.
