What is the best VN (visual novel) to introduce to a newb?

Though this one isn't recommended for a beginners, if you feel you have some experience with VN's try out Ever 17, one of the best VN's out there. But in my opinion, a little tough to get all the endings though x.x Still a very enjoyable experience.

There is no such thing as "best VN to introduce to a newb". What you should be looking for is what kind of story you like and choose accordingly.

Yes the easier slice of life type anime is good for beginners. Shuffle,Da Capo,Kanon or Edelweiss and KiraKira. On the medium level I'd say Sharin no Kuni Himawari no Shoujo ,G-Senjou no Maou and Fate/Stay Night will be the best. Ever-17 can be hard on a newbie for reasons I cannot spoil.

Shuffle! was my first VN, then Da Capo & Da Capo 2, and after those 2 I played Fate/Stay Night, Kanon, Tsukihime, Ever 17 (I didn't find it difficult, darkk168), Clannad, Little Busters!, and Higurashi. I'm currently playing Katahane and Shikkoku no Sharnoth -What a Beautiful Tomorrow-, and while they're both fun, they could be a little challenging for beginners (especially SnS). If you want yuri though, check out Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo, aka A Kiss for the Petals. It's reeeeally vanilla.
EDIT: If you have any interest in otome games, you can always check out RE: Alistair+. It's a free doujin game: http://www.sakevisual.com/realistair/ that only takes about 30+ minutes to complete, so it's easy to get the hang of things.

Ever 17 (I didn't find it difficult...)I suppose the reason why darykk168 said that Ever-17 can be hard on a newbie is because of the way the story unfolds. You have to clear all routes before playing the true one and many newbies may not have that kind of patience or got desinterested while playing the other not so epic routes.

I actually started with KiraKira, Higurashi, and Princess Waltz. They're pretty easy and fun for a newbie and they're not as confusing as other visual novels.

Hmm... for a newbie, eh?
I have to ask first, what kind of story you like? And what kind of gameplay?
If you seek one with 'real' gampelay (like RPG and not just clicking the mouse a whole day, reading torrents of words), maybe you could try tears to tiara or Xross -something-sorry I forgot.
But if such gameplay doesn't matter, then I recommend most VN in the Fakku's Most Recommeded VN section.

As for me...
the Vn that i think it would be good for first timer player is..
- True Remembrance
- Planetarian
- Ever17
this Vn is rarely giving a first timer any difficulty of choosing route (well, the first two is a one liner route VN)
the story is short and they have a very good story..
I find difficulty in my first time when i start with CLANNAD... (it's my first VN, recommended by my cousin)
the game is long... but the story is very touching, so i keep playing until i get all the Ending...

Another not-so-easy-but-extremely-awesome VN out there is Muv Luv... it has a goofy name but it's amazing! Like a drama/mech/scifi.
When I get into a VN, I really get into it; every flag, every route is MINE, BABY! I have more patience than most in that regard.
[size=10]HAHAHA I'm just obsessive.[/h]

The Grey Knight :y
You COULD try the Phoenix Wright series as a starter. Some of the better ones I know are a little "advanced", as far as I'm concerned.
