Depends on the game itself.
If the characters already had default names, I'll keep it that way.
But if it's something like an MMO or not a serious atmosphered game, I'll just name my character with my username.

Most of the time I make up the name on the spot, one that I think matches the character's race, ideals, origins, basically how I imagine myself playing him or her in interaction with other people from his/her world, but I usually fall back on my game name, Lankta, which was my first true name in video gaming and the name of my main when I was playing WOW.

I typically go for the canon name, but I name my character(s) Shanghai if I'm not provided one. If there are multiple party members, chances are a female will be named Alice.

Depends on what I'm playing. If I'm playing a RPG I usually stick with the default. If I'm playing a mmo I usually choose a name of a candy or something sweet.

If it's a canon name like Link or Serge I will leave as is.
If it's something like an mmo I give the character a name that sounds best for the chosen class.
For example I'll name a male paladin/knight type class Maximillian.

Default name if possible. Otherwise I use Vayne or Vert as the name. I tend to like names that start with a "V". In the case of Skyrim, I chose a Nord and then went to a wiki site that listed the names of all Nords in the game. I named my character Vidrald, after one of the names there.

Depends on the game. If there's already one provided I would use it. If not then I'll use my first name.

I always put and "!" after the name to make it seem like someone is yelling for the hero to arrive

Always a variant of Shaggnificent. if there aren't enough spaces, Shaggnifico(male toon), Shaggnifica(female toon). if it's a game i've played through a few times, i try to make it something amusing when they npc's talk to me: "Hail! Perhaps you can do a job for me, Spunk Juggler?". even more fun when you can make a custom class like in elder scrolls. they will sometimes use the class in stead of your name: "I have a job that only a Goat Roper can do!"

In my elementary days I always use my first name in any game that you can name the MC. But when I went to high school I used the default name or if no default name is provided, I just name the MC the nearest appliance that I could see. But now I name my chara as my alias if no default name is provided. Thinking a name takes me really a long time, sometimes I just stare at the screen for an hour thinking a name.

Touma. The U is silent. I always used my initials D.J. Until last year when I got SMT devil survivor over clocked last year. I struggled finding a cool sounding name and it just hit me. I've used it ever since. If its the legend of Zelda I always pick link. In Pokemon I always named the rival something funny like dumbass. It me laugh everytime someone calls his name.
