To be on topic though, since we're choosing one thing, I'll go with the Xbox360 stock pad. The D-Pad is just too stiff and small to be used decently or at all for fighters. It's been waaaay too often that I'd just get incorrect inputs in SSFIV (when I used to play), hated when I could not perform TK motions with Cammy.

360 controller is pretty lame with fighters i also had a lot of trouble with the dreamcast controller, but i didnt play too many fighters back then. on a side note has anyone tried that new 360 controller? you can tweak the dpad so its a bit more manageable for fighters....damn thing cost as much as a full price game.

Gamecube Controller. I tried playing SF2 alpha or something and I just couldn't make it work. Couldn't pull out a DP.
On topic though, the N64 was by far the worst controller to play fighting games on, right next to the Duke Xbox controller.

The Wiimote is the worst fighting game controller, it works only for Brawl, but for games like Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2, it's awful! Castlevania Judgment, Tatsunoko VS Capcom etc

You're not getting my annoyance here.. playstation changed their l2 nd r2 buttons just to be cool. xbox didn't change anything bar their black and white buttons which became bumpers.
So the xbox's triggers are fine, as they've always been there, the playstation ones just became retarded with the triggers.. it isn't right, doesn't feel right... :|
Ps1/ps2 purist hating on ps3 controller. Always hated it, always will.
That and it's small.. the xbox controller fits in my hand much better :D
