Would you recomend Xcom?

I'm looking for a game to keep me occupied 'till about Christmas time. I really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles and I've heard Xcom is comparable to it. If you couldn't recommend Xcom, what would you recommend?

If you've ever played Civilization and liked it, you'll likely enjoy XCOM. Similar to Civ, when playing XCOM, always keep Murphy's Law in mind as anything that can go wrong in that game likely WILL go wrong (especially on higher difficulties). But if you ask me, I think that adds tension to the gameplay and punishes poor strategy, which I count as a plus. Overall, the game is fun and an excellent time sink that you'll likely play for a few hours without even realizing how much time has gone by.

I would recommend it since u mention valkyria chronicles gameplay a bit similar and like psbox362 said it punishes poor strategy, does make it more interesting.

It's a decent game. A big change from the FPS craze that's been going on these days. The gameplay is quite different from the original X-COM, but damn the difficulty is still the same. I find the two actions a turn system to be kinda shit, because you only get to shoot once per turn. Coupled with shitty accuracy, and you now find that your squad has become smaller during the alien turn. But in the end, the original UFO Defense is still the best.

Finished it on normal ironman mode for the story. I would still recommend this game, black friday if you can. Still a little buggy, like cinematic shooting through walls (yeah...), also don't be suprised if you miss at a 95% hit rate.... also the ending was pretty meh...
Still the gameplay is still good, enjoyed the difficulty (Classic). If you enjoyed VC you'll like this game.

Hell, my sniper can wipe out an entire squad in a single turn with the right conditions. Certain classes have ways to expand their combat effectiveness in a given turn, provided they're ranked high enough. As for your accuracy problems, you can always slap a scope on any of your soldiers to bump up their accuracy a bit. The whole turn based aspect to the gameplay is to focus on strategy. Where to place your troops, what to equip them with, and even who should shoot first provide some factor in how you play. Believe me, I've had moments where I held off on using my sniper (by far my best soldier) on easy targets, should any extraterrestrial unpleasentness find it's way out of the shadows and into my flank.
