Sadly, us late birds got into it right as MU went down, sucks huh?Well, better late than never~
There are torrents, people need to use it more.
Play more, don't underestimate the sex oriented ones too. VNs aren't just about sad or epic stories.
Aside from the sex what is good about the sex oriented VNs?
If the whole point of the VN is be an eroge why not just stick with doujins?
These kind of mindset is what I meant as "underestimating". Do you think a sex oriented VN is just there for the sex? Do you think that it doesn't have any story at all? Do you think there's no character development at all?
Generalizing all sex oriented VNs into the "mindless-sex, watching-a-H-anime-is better" and can't even see what's under those sex scenes classifies you as close-minded.
Besides the obvious high sexual content, they will always have stories and character developments. I'm not saying that "all of them" are good, I'm just saying don't underestimate them and actually try to play as much as you can. And honestly not all Sex oriented VNs have a bad story, it could actually be comedic, dark themed or even have heavy drama.
A Good VN player actually knows which sex oriented VNs are actually boring and which one that are actually interesting.
VNs are not just about "Sob-stories", "Mind-fuck plot twists" or "Epic action".
Try playing
-AV King
-Bishoujou Mangekyou
-Amatsu Kaze ~Kugutsu Jinpuu-chou~
-Beat Blades Haruka
-Sisters ~Natsu no Saigo no Hi~
-Rance Series
VNs will always be stuck with the "porn tag", if you can't bear with that thought then just stop playing VNs.
I will still tell people the truth that VNs are originally 18+ and just simply tell them "See, don't underestimate a VN. Just because it has sex scenes doesn't mean the story is mindless."
i'm not closed minded, I don't understand. Why does a "story oriented VN need so much hentei scenes? I understand the premise, make a game that has hentai, attract young men, make money. Perhaps your right maybe some VN's do have story, but if there is that much hentei then I can't help but think that the real purpose for the characters was to fuck.
VNs will always be stuck with the "porn tag", if you can't bear with that thought then just stop playing VNs.
It's this quote that gets me. I'm here posting on fakku. That means I like porn. I also like VN's with porn. However when I came to start reading VNs, I came because I wanted to experence something new and get in the loop with some of the anime disscussion, like for example F/SN and E17.
I like epic plots and mind screw, and sometime cute romanace. While I do look forward to the hentai it's not why i'm here reading it. I want plot and characters. In a story with plot there has to be sigificant character development before any sex happens. Yes I realize that in doujins they fuck for no reason, but if it happens in a VN it takes away from the story, except for rare cases like the School Days anime where is made the story deep and gave up an ending that is open to interpretation.
Point is this.
Like plot, hentai is ok if done right. Most of the time it's not and instead it's there because it needs to be there to sell copies.
It's pretty obvious that Nasu doesn't like writing Ero, that why the Hentai in F/SN is so bad. Now that he's famous his works are clean, the way they should be.
Other VNs have a player main character, this can be ok sometimes but most of the time he's just a douchebag that screws everything he can.
In the end, the hentai in VN's hurts it. Because of the medium's legacy of evolving from eroge and dating sims, people just associate it with that kind of stuff. This is a problem, because we get more VN's like "Violent seamen inferno" and less epic stories like "Ever 17".
maybe we are agreeing with each other. I know when a VN is a porn game and when it has a plot, it's pretty easy to tell and I know that some VN's with a lot of Hentei can have plot (though I don't think i've played any yet). Still I think when there has to be porn involved something is lost.
Edit: After looking at the VN's you listed i'm now sure that we are talking about the same thing. Those aren't just porn games, infact they look fun. I would consider giving one a try someday if they ever get translated.

RPGs and other genre, is just a complimentary/side genre. So there are VNs with RPG elements.

I would consider giving one a try someday if they ever get translated. Yes, just like I said, being a sexual oriented VN doesn't mean it's all about dumb sex. Let's see the ones from the examples:
-AV King -> As the title says, You're going to direct an AV because you're trying to pay of the girls debt. Replay value is high, because the amount of ways to make your "AV". and also the girls acting is a factor. Which makes this a fun comedic VN to play. Try imagining your first time directing an AV and the girl can't act, hilarity ensues.
-Bishoujou Mangekyou -> This one is pretty simple, The conversion and progress pretty much happens in the sex scenes, but this one a has a simple sweet love story.
-Amatsu Kaze ~Kugutsu Jinpuu-chou~ -> One of the longest VNs that I played, shit seriously. Amatsukaze is a branching adventure game with card battles and RPG elements. The sex is there to strengthen the characters, and also will choose the route. But this is one of the VNs that actually balanced a good story with intrigue and many sexual content.
-Beat Blades Haruka -> as an ALicesoft game it will have high sexual content. The sex in this VN is the only way to level up your girls who are ninjas, and of course will choose the route. Like Amatsukaze, despite the high sexual content the story ia also good, with a bit of classic action drama.
-Sisters ~Natsu no Saigo no Hi~ -> Sex happens very late, but it comes with a lot. the Story itself is pretty mind-fucking a bit. The story is pretty much a casual love story.
-Rance Series -> Do I need to explain this lol.
And honestly, how will it hurt. A sex oriented VN is made for the sex. I'm not talking about whether a VN needs hentai or not, but just a simple Do not underestimate a VN just because it has a high sexual content (sexual oriented).
There's also other factors that are just as important as story, Like I said, not all VNs are "sob-stories", "Minf-fuck plot twist" or "epic action", but will still be highly praised for it's content.

Nah, don't have the time your motivation. People commenting about it's "the best emotionally VN evah" even though it's their first VN kills my hype and motivation.
Already downloaded it, but at that time I was already busy playing White Album 2. then I read the comments, then facepalmed. Now I'm just waiting for the hype to die first, which is maybe 1 more week.

I consider it a good thing. People read KS and then they go onto other VNs.
I haven't read the comments because i'm afraid of spoilers.

In the long run, I just don't like how people treat KS, it's honestly one of the overrated VNs. This treatment never happened to other translated VNs, Like G-senjou no maou, Muv-Luv Alternative or Little Busters.
I even had a dirty assumption that everyone likes it just because it has disabled girls, which is "not new" in the VN industry.

Currently on the start of Episode 3 of Umineko) maybe some users already changed their opinions about it. I hope that it can be at least a enjoyable experience since I'm not expecting something incredible.

This treatment never happened to other translated VNs, Like G-senjou no maou, Muv-Luv Alternative or Little Busters.I agree that it is definitely overrated, but I have to say that I am nonetheless impressed. It's not an amazing, groundbreaking, blow your mind type of VN, but for someone like me who has been following the development of the game since it's conception, it is definitely very memorable. I guess seeing the result of 5 years of volunteer work by amateurs to make a game just draws me in.
Katawa Shoujo isn't a VN that will ever make it into my Top 10 or Top 20 list, but the emotional connection to a project that I've been following for so long, as well as the admiration for the developers have left an impact on me.
As you have said, I also dislike the fact that people who have little to no VN experience are out exclaiming that KS is the best VN.
On a completely different note, I'm finally getting back into LB! after a rather long period of neglecting it. Finishing up Kud route then into Refrain.
I have yet to play Muv-Luv Alternative cause I'm still only halfway through Muv-Luv/Extra... it's next on my to-play list. It's just that when I was transferring all my VNs onto an external hard drive, I lost most of my save data, and I lack the motivation to start Muv-Luv from scratch at the moment.

Sure, KS is overrated. It's pretty hyped after all and everything that is in a hype is overrated. Still, I think it is amazing and one of the best VNs I ever read. Sure, it has it's definite flaws in it's writing, but it's good points more than compensate it in my opinion. It's on the same level as Higurashi for me, although I would never compare the two, since they are completely different (something more people should bear in mind when they compare KS with other VNs). As of now, the arrogant and condescending "veterans" are getting more on my nerves than the ignorant "newbies".
Anyway, I want to buy a VN from J-List next month (which is pretty soon). The first time that I'll actually buy one. I'm torn between Yume Miru Kurusi and Demonbane. On one hand, the latter sounds more interesting, on the other hand I don't like that it craps all over the Cthulhu Mythos...

KS isn't the greatest VN of all time, that is purely subjective. However I think that in it's own way KS does a few things differently that will set it apart from other VNs.
1. Being a freeware work, KS doesn't need to focus on enticing readers by making characters that follow overused and boring tropes. It doesn't relay excessive hentei nor does it have characters that are too much like what we are used to seeing
2. On the other hand it deals with a normally taboo subject with a certain finesse. It doesn't take the whole disability issue and make fun of it, while at the same time it doesn't make it into a "how you can overcome anything" morle either. KS is a story that has people that physically disabled. It's not really about the disabiliy it just acknowledges that it's there. This leads me to 3
3. People can relate to the routes and the characters, weather it's Hanako's scars or Rin's strange way of expressing herself, the story still hits home in a unusual way. People relate to the problems and characters, in the end it becomes inspirational because it's a story about people, not the disability. It doesn't put down disabled people, nor does it overglorfy them, like that one armed surfer girl. It gets it right, saying that the disability doesn't matter and it's okay to be you.
sure KS has it's flaws but I think those reasons alone is going to keep it's reputation as a top teir VN for a long time. KS was hyped a bit but I think that when the hype dies its not falling from grace. It's one of the best VN's out there.

If it hasn't been said. I recommend reading Yume Miru Kusuri : A drug that makes you dream.
There's 3 potential paths in this VN, all of them are exceedingly heart jerking at times. Although Aeka Shiraki's route gave me a heart attack near the end. I cried at least 3 times during her route because it was so cruel and sad. But like in all VNs, there's usually an "Alls-Well-Ends-Well" ending. Despite how horrifying it becomes. :]

That, I wish that people would seed more now that DDLs are almost rendered useless.

Different from my previous plans, I bought Snow Sakura. Since it's the first time I buy a VN from J-List (and in general), I thought I should go with something cheaper, but still interesting.
However, I won't be able to read it until weekend, due to my bad connection.

Good choice as well. Not as good as Yume Miru Kusuri, but certainly one of my favorites.

I just got into VN's like 3 days before MU went offline. Then I actually started to look around the Fakku forums more and I was like "omgwtf fakku has a VN forum!?" then I raped all the downloads for 2 days straight. felt good, but my comp is running on like 4gigs of space left now

Well, yes, if you split them into parts that will fit 700mb and burn those CDs as Data Discs.
