what would you say about adult swim...

hurt or helped the anime world?

Definitely helped. All of the anime shows on Adult swim are the best sellers of every month either on DVD or manga. I think it introduced quite a few people to the anime culture. Naruto and Bleach are a testament to that.

I still don't fully understand that.

I'm all for anime getting adopted in the United States full force. A lot of people complain about kids who get into Bleach, Death Note, or whatever anime is on adult swim, but that's how it's meant to be. The intended audience for most of the shows is pretty young (which doesn't stop them from being amazing anime) so let them be wild fanboys who buy Naruto lunch boxes.

My theory; more people watching anime = more anime = awesome.

Although the dubbing on just about everything brought over is complete crap.

As Jacob noted the dubbing is terrible, so much so that it practically feels like I'm being punched in the ears. Also they tend to mangle important aspects of characters and plots.

I'm not saying the dubbing isn't shit, but the fact of the matter is, a good portion of the people watching dubbed anime are either too stupid or don't have the means to find it subbed. Its something that you have to bear with because even if it is degraded, its still anime. The Japanese and American moral standards, cultures, and various other factors that go into the production of any media are different. I've always given dubbed anime some leeway because of that.

Yes....I (and probably everyone else here) was aware of that from the beginning. All I said was that I don't wanna watch it dubbed not that other people can't.

(I'm not very clear on why I had to explain this at all.)

I agree that it definitely has helped the community. I know a lot of people that haven't even given anime a thought, but when I say I watch it they say stuff like, "Oh yeah I saw something on adult swim, it was pretty cool."

The only bad part is dubbing. It's like nails on a chalk board. A perfect example is Eureka seveN. I first watched a couple episodes on adult swim, liked it. Watched the whole series, then saw a couple episodes on TV again and it was awful. I was wondering how they could get the voices so wrong and make them sound so annoying.

i'm glad to read some of these answers. i'm a late bloomer when it comes to getting into anime... my start was adult swim. i got into inuyasha first (this was the birth of anime on adult swim)... then when my boy came along, he was a fan of bleach (non-dubbed) but got me to watch the dub so I could get into the story line. I still watch it at times, but it's not like the original versions. But I owe it to them for opening the door.

Adult Swim is the main outlet of anime to the American audience, so, of course it is helping it. Not only that, but the network boasts the greatest collection of anime outside of Japan, (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Shin-chan, Death Note, Bleach, Code Geass to come, Etc.). And while the dub does suck at times, exceptions have to be made to a few like say, Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion, with the former being, imo, better than the subbed version.

Recent times tell me that Adult Swim is intentionally trying to hurt anime, as it is slowly fazing it out, what with the late time slots, and only 2 animes continuing to release new episodes. If accomplished, the American mainstream is only left with Cartoon Network's "safe dubs" (Why TTGL? Why?) which will ultimately deal a blow to the anime industry as big as Geneon's departure from distribution.

I really don't see the "slowly fazing it out" part, even if it is, I highly doubt AS would intentionally try to hurt anime. Hell, I remember immediately before AS was formed, the only late-night anime was Pilot Candidate, the others were just uncensored versions of DBZ and Gundam Wing. Also, I don't think anyone could deal a blow to the industry as big as Geneon's departure.

Though I have to say that it took too long for AS to pick up Eva. There was a huge gap between Giant Robot Week and when AS started airing it. (I am grateful for Giant Robot Week for airing Nadesico though, as I bought the entire series a month later.)

Death Noteis different then Naurto. Adult Swim is differnet then CN. Most people on the froums ofm adult swim got pissed when InuYahsa and BLEACH where choosen. Most people want Monster and GL to be the next choice.

Adult Swim both helps and hurts anime...it lures people in with Bleach....and shows them anime can be Art when they air stuff like NGE and Death Note.

ok, i hope i don't piss anyone off... but I have to thank InuYasha for getting me to watch Adult Swim... I loved it, it was like my own soap opera. It wasn't the art, it was the "soap opera-ish/girly" exchange. At that same time, i became a huge Cowboy Bebop fan too... and that's was beautiful art as well.

Point is, for me, I love InuYasha/Bleach as well as the Death Notes/Blood +/Code Geass (soon to be)... I just don't want to blow off those other just because they are corny.

I'm beginning to feel old (again). Robotech was my first 'soap opera'. Anyway, anime would be helped a lot more if [as] would advertise their anime a bit more.

Well heres my take on Adult Swim hurting the anime industry. I find that they've done a great job introducing thier viewers by bombarding them with great animes such as FMA,Eureka7,Inuyasha, and more. Now here comes the hurt. The times when they air the shows and the other branches of anime on tv.

Anime at its present form in America is having a hard time being discovered by people. When Toonami went down the drain Adult Swim started implementing alot more anime into thier scedules(remember saturday night anime?). Right now the only shows you'll see are Deathnote(which is too linear to just jump right in and enjoy) and Bleach. Naruto in America is basically the current generations DBZ.

What most people have not learned of is something called The Anime Network which basically is a channel or VoD service depending on your cable/satellite provider. The anime they put out is massed in those great but very underappreciated genres but they dont have any big animes to give rise to industries specifically designated to the anime community.

So the basic point to my rant here is that Cartoon Network/Adult Swim are "monopolizing" the more likable/popular animes while the networks designated to anime have to deal with not specifically sub-par anime, but less likly to become iconic anime.

I think that at the beginning AS was helping the anime industry, but now they just "have" anime. They don't promote anime as much as their comedy shows and they constantly change the schedule which makes people lose interest. I believe that Code Geass Will be a victim of AS, If it wasn't for the various anime websites that I visit I wouldn't have known about it airing. The only commercial they have of Code Geass aired the monday after its premiere. So while they have helped anime in the past, nowadays AS doesn't seem to care about anime ratings anymore.

Actually they're obsessed with ratings. That's why they totally fucked their Saturday night schedule up. It was good the way they had it before, but because they weren't getting enough ratings that thought there was a problem. The only problem was that they failed to take into account that the majority of their viewers are in school and go out on Saturday nights.

Adult Swim can't be blamed for the downfall of any anime, by itself. You're right in saying that they have anime, but thats really all there is to it. They don't have to sell it, fuck they don't even need to draw in ratings. What they do is provide us with a way to see it. After that, its up to us to decide its fate. Fans make or break shows all the time. The do advertise Code Geass, I've seen promos everyday this week.

People really forget the true spirit of AS. Its not anime, its all the other shows. AS was built on Space Ghost, The Brak Show, Sealab, ATHF, Harvey Birdman, and Home Movies. I've been watching it since the beginning and it was a couple of years before they started playing anime. They fell off when they started airing some of these new shows, but its their American shows that really paved the way for its success.
