i have come to several conclusions after watch the deathnote series,

man cannot be god

justice will always prevail

one always have the choice of choosing his own path and create his own destiny

SOMETIMES, fate is undeniable

and finally, deathnote doesn't exist, if it does, it's probably at the hands of a 6 year-old asian kid who's still trying to figure out what he's living for

Well, I've only read the manga since I expected the anime to follow the manga closely anyway, but I have to be honest in thinking that the end was expected.

Why? Biggest reason: What L could not do, which he was 1mm close to bringing out Light's identity as Kira, Near finished Light off because Near's as smart as L, especially when all the past evidence material is right in front of him. Plus, Light made some sloppy mistakes in the beginning and makes some more later on. I think one of Light's biggest hindering factor was family. If he wasn't as attached to his family, he would have been able to kill them off with ease. (Of course, that would make him a very cold-hearted bastard, if he wasn't already one.)

Eh? I got the exact opposite view. Light came across as a person who would use anyone and everyone to get his way. Even as his father lay on his deathbed, Light was still thinking of getting rid of Mello. And we never see Light visiting his mother or traumatized sister.

Anyway, I've only finished the manga, and the ending was almost exactly as I predicted. This includes Light being killed by Ryuk and Light's freak-out and revealing himself as Kira. I also figured that something Mello had done would help Near corner Light.

The ending is really sad, and maybe somewhat predictable. I strongly dislike it thought, as the charm of this serie is the moral duality. By killing Light, he took a stance and announced a winner. Moral is better then order, mercy is better then strictness...
I loved the serie, just because it had this duality. On the other hand, having Light win would be just as bad, and I suppose there needs to be an end.
He should have made 2 ends, one for those who side with Light, and one for Mello. Readers of Death Note always picks a favorite side anyway.

I saw it as:

Man can be god. We just need a smart enough man.

Light had the right idea, and he was well on his way to success, when the author got tired of think-battles, and decided that good should win in the end, no matter how unlikely.

Case in point: Pages were ripped out from a magical notebook, and false pages were inserted perfectly, and then, when the names were written, Kira's damned pride got the better of him, and he says "I win". Then, when it turns out he does NOT win, he freaks out and tried to write a solitary name in blood while his accomplice kills himself, instead of turning a few pages and writing the names again.

I could debate the art of inserting pages into notebooks, of a man keeping something his "God" told him to protect at all costs out of sight, of secret agents deciding that, because a man broke his schedule ONCE he was suspicious and thus had the damned book, and a host of other issues, but it stands to reason:

If the author had not decided that good should win in the end, Kira would have succeeded.

@Nate: No, justice will not. Not in the real world. When we deal with fiction, society expects justice to prevail, and thats why it does.

I saw it as more of an "If I kill my sister, that makes me look like Kira" kind of view.

@ Arizth: I got the feeling the author had decided that good would win as early as Light's god complex formed. I will admit that the ending requires a suspension of disbelief, but then again, it's hard to believe Light wasn't busted immediately after he killed Raye Penber. The problem with a mortal god, aside from being mortal, is demonstrated by Mikami. One moment he's all "God!", the next moment he's all "ZOMG! Not God!"

Anyone here read Volume 13? Oba (I don't know if the author is the one with the h in the name, I'm too lazy to walk across my room and check) pretty much stated that he invented most of the story as he went along. The story was like 1 chapter ahead of release at all times. The only thing planned was the 108 chapters to resemble the 108 truths of Buddha. There is also not really supposed to be any deeper meaning. Death Note is just interesting stuff that happens.

In regards to the ending, everyone knows what to expect. It was excellent and was animated spectacularly in both the anime and manga and it was great to have a logical conclusion after the fudging that happened during the Near/Mello arc but that kind of ruins the surprise. Of course, it was written excellently as well and really brings the whole story to a head and finishes nicely. I was really sad that Near lived though. He had to win but I wanted him to get killed since he was a smart ass son of a bitch. L was much more interesting and a kookier personality. Near was an inferior copy. I liked Mello's personality a lot more than Near since he was fucking brilliant but also a daredevil without any morals.

As a fun fact that most people probably wouldn't know without Volume 13, the artist switched the Near and Mello characters. Mello was supposed to be in Near's body and Near was supposed to be Mello.

You, my friend, deserve a buncha cookies. :D
As for the ending, I think it was good. I hate selfrightous god complexes which was what Light had, but I did enjoy seeing how he outsmarted the police at almost every turn (untill L and Near stepped in, at least). And I was happy to see Light die, by my 2nd favorite character no less, after what he did to L, who was my first favorite. Light thought he could become a god, but as stated at the start of this poll, no man can become a god.

I disliked the ending, plain and simple.
