[Locked] Katawa Shoujo Developer Q & A

Yo nice to meet ya, here have some questions (free of charge!)

Will there be a threesome scene with Misha?

Will we ever get to know why exactly Misha is at the school?

Will other classmates be introduced as side characters?

If you work on any future projects will you have them open to the public with people throwing ideas at a wall you you did earlier on for this one?

On the history blog it's mentioned that "T and F are fired from 4LS" but not specified why. Any comments?

Not really a question but I wanted to say I really liked how you guys made the characters not entirely stereotypes. That is to say that each of them showed more depth of personality than I've seen from other hentai VN.

So far none of the people you see in the classroom shot have sprites ingame, and none are planned. As for Misha, you probably find out something about her later in the story, but getting that intimate... well...

T and F were fired for lack of productivity. This should be enough.

Hey there, and thanks for coming here and doing this, especially this late at night (for you). Got a couple questions from a friend of mine, and a couple questions of my own, though I'm sure I'll think of more later as I only just found out about this.

The friend wishes to know if you, personally, have written anything else. He also is curious as to how many drafts the script of the demo went through before it got to this point.

I'd like to know, how hard was it synchronizing the writers' styles, and how well do you think it went? Especially Act 1; how difficult was it getting everyone to work together on a single path, with a single script, and a single style?

yes, I do write other things, and so do the rest of the writers (some more, some less). I mostly do short vignettes or sketches, contemporary fiction and magical realism are my usual genres. The version of Act 1 script you see in release is the fifth full draft.

Synchronizing the writing styles was and is mission impossible. All five of us have heavily characteristic styles and I could recognize in a second who has written any given scene or segment in KS. We try our best, but many things are engraved so deep in the personal way of doing things that it just won't be possible to make the script look like it was written by one person. For this reason, having the different stories written by different writers alone was a solution that we chose very early on.

Blue123 thank you for your time as well, what kind of music do you have planned/used during H-scenes, and does the music vary on the girl for each scene?

Not that it matters much, but I'm curious if you're going to be sending a completed copy to RAITA. Having came up with the concept of the characters (which I'm sure was a joke at the time), I wonder if he might enjoy having a copy of the fan-made game.

Also, do you have any intention of having someone translate this to Japanese? I'm positive that there are some Japanese people that would be highly interested in playing this game in a language they understand.

Edit(Question already answered)

Can i ask if there's going to be a part in the version which explains what Rin was doing in the town during the Lilly route? Other than being "mysterious" and weird and all, i was hoping for a serious answer

Hello there. I got interested in this VN and it is quite refreshing from the usual ones I've seen. I didn't check everything into the demo yet, but I'm working on it. As for my questions...

1. I've noticed that the girls seems to be separated in groups of two in terms of friendship. And of course, it's hard to miss the tension between two girls. I would like to say it's a refreshing take on it, since I've seen too many VN where all the girls are either strangers to each other or are all friends. My question is where did you get the idea for that? Was it originally planned like this or was it an idea that came later?

2. I suppose I should expect it, but will hanging out with certain girls change how others look on the main character? Somehow, the idea of Lilly refusing to spend time with the MC out of spite is tearing my heart.

edit:

3. Almost forgot... I just want to know, there won't be any 'sad' endings where someone die(in this case, MC) for a girl, right? Nothing frustrates me more than those kinds of ending. If the story is that good, you're talented enough for a happy ending.

Why not have a listen?

Also, yes, there will be several pieces, depending on the context of the scene.

Will we perhaps see an Act II release or a full path release (as in all the acts pertaining to one of the heroines), or do we have to wait for the full game to be finished?

After looking at the girls star sign on the webpage for Katawa Shoujo, I could kinda see a relation to them and their personality. Did you base their birth date out from their personalities?

Also, who painted the mural in RL?

The birth dates are not decided based on personality. Some are random (Misha, Shizune), some are based on some real life event (Rin's birthday is on the date I wrote the first scene about her), some are plot-relevant (Lilly, Hanako). The mural was painted by climatic.

It sounds like you guys went through a few character revisions, was there any major changes personality wise from the start of the project to the version we see now? If not, were there any major revisions to the characters physically?

Was there anything scrapped from the storyline from the previous versions that you wanted in the final version, but had to get rid of for whatever reasons?

Hisao has went through a lot of changes over the developement, and so has Hanako. They are the most notable, but some of the side characters have been tweaked in one way or another as well. The physical characteristics, on the other hand, have mostly remained the same.

Yeah many funny scenes were scrapped from Act 1 to make way for other things. I know a lot of people who miss the dialogue about talking trees.

This occurred to me after asking about the Misha threesome....
any chance of there being an Emi + Rin threesome scene?

How was Rin's personality thought up and how amazingly hard is it to write her?

Emi and Rin are unlikelier to be that intimate than Shizune and Misha. Their relationship is very different.

As for Rin's personality... that's a hard question to answer. She has this inner structure that holds her together, that I built up over time, but I couldn't really tell how after the fact. Writing her is extremely hard even for me, and when our other writers do it I keep telling "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" all the time (or at least thinking so).

Love this game, brilliant and unique concept. Two thumbs up.

When making this game, did you take any reference from actual special schools for disabled people (Like studying the cases of real disabled people to get an understanding of their mental conditions or habits, or learning those special schools' daily activities)? Or did you use your own ideas?

Are there any plans for releasing a game for monetary gain through this team?

Is it true there are no plans for a Misha route?

@Blue123
Very nice indeed I love the flow it has, I am in awe, I have another question for you, is the amount of music sufficient to what you wanted in this game, or were there more you wanted to add, or maybe one that you considered removing?

Aura, it is a privilege to be in your presence. What caught my interest in Katawa Shoujo was it's well worded dialogue and clever analogies. My question is, does your group plan on complementing the dialogue with voice actors? If not, would you still consider it? If yes, would you hire English voice actors or Japanese voice actors. Or maybe just for the sex scenes?

KS won't be voiced. It's completely unfeasible for us to do.

spalose wrote...
Thank you for your time Aura, if you could please, like your first post mentions, can we get the color of each girls panties, or any other taste details of there unmentionables ^_^

There is no "official" guide to the underwear, as we haven't so far needed them (except for one character)

Here's a link to sketches and concept/fan art that you might find relevant. http://shimmie.katawa-shoujo.com/post/list/underwear/1

What was the original language of the work?

Where did the idea for rin's personality come from and why would you decide to give the armless person this distinct personality?

KS is written in English. See my previous answer for some insight into Rin's existence. As for why... I wanted her to not be only the disability gimmick because that would not hold a full story afloat. Her specific personality type was something suggested in the vast cesspool of original dev forums, which was then picked up as official.

Is Akira going to have any (major?) involvement in the story?

Why isn't there a mentally retarded girl?

Yamaku is a school for kids with physical disabilities. Mental ones would require a completely different environment.

I really enjoyed the subtle humor in many of the scene names. I found that many of them had more than one layer of meaning to them. Did any of the scene names end up inspiring some of the writing of a scene or where they all done afterward?

All scene names were decided after the scenes were written, and the names are inspired by the events of the game rather than the other way around.

I think the music as it is, is already quite sufficient. However, there's always the possibility we'll be adding more beyond the current collection, and what's planned.

Thank you very much for taking time to answer these questions. It is very much appreciated!

@Aura:Rin is possibly my favorite character next to Emi. What sparked you to make a character with a disability such as a birth defect and surgical procedures? And, if not put as a reason in the first answer, did fantasies play any role in her creation?

Heya. My roommate and I at college have been keeping track of the game's progress for over a year now and I was really excited when you guys released the demo. Being it was from 4chan spawn, I was expecting to get a laugh out of it, maybe like a character or two, but you guys have really blown me away. I played the demo to 100% and all of the characters are very well developed even in the demo. The music is pretty great, fitting the mood and characters well, and I like the overall presentation of everything in the game. The simple yet effective art style, the use of actual photos for backgrounds, the writing is very well done, and the humor in the game is great. I really look forward to the full release.

My first question applies to Kenji. How did you guys come up with his personality and his absurd way of thinking and his conspiracies? The character is pretty hilarious and I was not expecting anything like what happened if you get stuck hanging out with him for the festival.

Next, how did you decide on each girl's personalities? I feel that a lot of the characters didn't have the personality you expected them, too, and it gives the characters a little more substance. Hanako was the only one I got exactly what I expected from in the demo, but she was still well built and her type of character is always a necessity I feel in these types of games.

What were some of the challenges writing scenarios for this time of eroge?

Lastly, which of the girls is your favorite?

Kenji is a parody of the personality of one of the developers. The person in question comes up with Kenjis hijinks himself, so it's not hard.

The base personalities were decided with a vote, back when there still was a big amount of 4chan anons throwing ideas around. Of course all characters have gone a long way from there, especially Emi, Shizune and Rin. They are for the most part the work of their respective writers.

One big challenge in scenario writing was the setting. High School, even a special one like this, does not really allow larger-than-life stories that are so epic they will make a viking cry girly tears. As the life of the setting revolves around the daily goings-on of a school, the plots and events will also have to revolve around that as well. For Act 1 specifically, the high degree of complex branching was extremely challenging to plan, execute and write around. The path stories will be more linear so I hope we won't have as much trouble.

As I said already, Rin is my favourite due to me being her writer.

So my Questions for you:

How did you keep yourself motivated, or was that never a problem for you?

Your Words of Wisdom for people that would like to follow your Path?

The biggest motivator for me is the rest of the dev team. They count on me doing my lot, and I trust they do theirs in return.

I'd heavily advise against doing a project of KS's magnitude. It's much better to start small. A 10 000 word VN is a good first project, to learn the ropes.

What extras, if any do you plan to release with the game? I saw the vid you had with Melty Blood, and I thought it'd be interesting if something like that could be included. Or at least some high quality versions of Katawa Shoujo parodying other eroge OPs.

We haven't planned any specific extras yet, because we have to finish the game itself first :P
