Are we really praying to God, or are we praying to ourselves? That's what I want to know. I used to be Christian and pray daily... now I wonder if it possible that prayer is just a form of self meditation disguised into religion, to offer consolation or guidance. Maybe no one is listening, maybe we are answering ourselves subconsciously or emotionally. Maybe God is just a part of our brain....
Repetitive ritual (repeating the same prayer, like when using a rosary) causes a great calming effect, this allows the mind a greater clarity (to meditate on the problems in life, and/or the mysteries of the faith).
I am one of those who believes in god, but doesn't buy all of the crap fundies sell to make themselves feel more secure in their faith. Two reasons:
-Great forces hold the universe together, at this point we have little to no explanation as to how things started, what these forces are, and why we don't just blink out of existence at a moment's notice.
-I've felt a spiritual connection with a force greater than myself (as a psychicly sensitive person). Specifically, this phenomenon occurs while I attend church. I choose to explain it using conventions related to the Judeo-Christian god. This, very personal, evidence is enough to solidify culturally indoctrinated faith.
(Add them to lack of disproving evidence, which is a weak argument, but when combined makes a strong case.)
