Im an atheist, so I obviously dont pray to god.
But, I was wondering, to those who do pray: Why? I understand that its a natural part of religion, but Im honestly just curious.
THIS IS IN NO WAY MEANT TO BE A HOSTILE QUESTION> IM JUST IGNORANT AS TO WHY, SO PLEASE DONT TAKE OFFENSE :)

Catholic answer:
We pray over food, so that it will spiritually nourish us, before sleeping to be spiritually renewed, and for other people so that their prayers may be answered.
We also pray for help with things we have no control over. God gave us free will, but hasn't abandoned his children.
"Christian" (generic protestant answer):

Logical answer (to appeal to rational atheists):
Prayer holds many meanings, christians of all kinds pray in ritual, for good fortune, and for the less fortunate (sometimes. I do, but it's uncommon). They believe asking God for things will send help enough to put them inside of humanity's (or the prayer personally) reach. Numbers are important, as they are in rituals of several religions, but they believe prayer also lends a personal connection to their chosen deity. To allow for unanswered ones, they often cite the "Grand Design", meaning that it wasn't meant to be.
Personal answer: See Catholic answer, also append:
-Meditation, repetitive prayer calms the mind, allowing for clear thought.
-Self betterment, for help to put goals into my reach (personal ones, not monetary)
-Family, my family is "less fortunate"
