Basically, they're "eternal" formats, in which all sets are legal to play. However, back in the first few sets, there were quite a few extremely powerful cards that are either banned, or restricted (limited to one in your deck).

An example of one of those cards is the infamous Black Lotus. Look it up on ebay.
(when you see it) Pretty crazy, huh?

EDIT: Oh right, here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/resources/formats-sanctioned
Better information on formats.

Thanks a lot. This will help me get a better idea of what this game is like. The game's basics are easy to understand, but with it's long history and numerous cards it's overwhelming to some new players like myself.

Unless you play legacy (or vintage, although that format is basically dead), most of the time you don't actually need to know most of the intricate card interactions, the more complex ones being incredibly obscure and rarely come up (except in edh), for example, Opalescence and Humility.

If all you play is standard/limited your fine, the worst it gets is confusion over a new mechanic that gets cleared pretty quickly.

combat is what confuses most new players (especially people who come over from yugioh, it seems). once you get a grasp on combat, you'll be pretty much set. everything else is either written on the card, is self-explanatory, or is just plain weird (in that case you'll have to ask a judge or look up the ruling, no avoiding that though)

yeah, i played some edh today (been awhile since i played magic outside of playtesting against myself, lol). it's amazing how far equipping a swiftfoot boots to a creature will get you. i was beatin' people up with a yew spirit. a frikkin' YEW SPIRIT! it had a warhammer, lashwraith, and the boots on it. no one could answer the boots fast enough, lol.

The one that's similar to lightning greaves, but hexproof instead of shroud, for 1 mana equip cost instead of 0? Rofl, that's some funny stuff. How much were you able to swing for with that Yew Spirit?
0
yeah that's the one.

i first swung for 30, then 60, then 60 again. it may not seem high but considering this started turn 5 in an edh game, that ain't bad, especially considering in was gaining that much life in the process.
0
I love landing a turn 1 serra ascendant in edh, it easily and measurably dominates games...course you have to land it but still.

wait sec........why am i running yew spirit and not chameleon colossus? *pause*

July 7-8 is the set's prerelease, so probably a week or so after that. I think 2012 rotates out once that happens. The Scars of Mirrodin block won't reotate until the next set, Return to Ravnica (I think, correct me if I'm wrong).

i'm not sure about rotations, but here's a link to the m13 spoilers if anyone's still not up to speed on that

the cards i'm wanting is diabolic revelations (edh goooooodness ^^),and trading post.
and probably sublime archangel, just cuz the art is sexy :3

Rotation only occurs with the release of the fall set (typically october)

Scars of Mirrodin block, Magic 2012, Innistrad and Magic 2013 will all be legal until the release of return to ravnica (the core sets overlap for a bit), when return to ravnica is released, scars of mirrodin and magic 2012 will no longer be legal in standard (Scars of Mirrodin Block includes: Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged and New Phyrexia)

When did Avacyn Restored come out?

And when is Return to Ravnica coming out too? I found my Ravnica deck when I went back home and I'd like to see new stuff as well as old stuff that will come out with this set.

avacyn restored came out may 4th. return to ravnica comes out october 5th.

Okay then. Avacyn should be able to use in Standard then. We play Vintage here. Also just bought myself a Event pack as well as a few rares and lands as of right now. I'll edit to show pics.

Also found my old cards as well. Yay for going back home for cards! My old Ravnica/M9 cards are still ballin' as well as the Mirrodin cards that I used to own.

Found them with a pile of other TCGs I used to collect :

I've played every game in that pile for better or worse. Look for dark confidants (Bob is he is affectionately called) or lands with 2 different types (forest island for example), if you ripped them from packs, congrats, you made a ton of money.

Went to M13 prerelease, got a sublime angel. Some guy got $100 out of the whole deal (foil Ajani, sublime angel, some other money card I forget), of course trades it to the store for half value....

i wasn't able to make the prerelease (work). i'll probably just buy the cards i want in singles like i always do. as an edh (and only edh) player who only needs one copy of most things, this is probably the smart thing to do anyway. (wanting a sublime archangel, trading post x2, diabolic revelations, whatever the blue ring is called, and the new liliana)

one of the main drawbacks of going to prereleases: that lucky douche that pulls tons of sweet shit...lookin all smug and shit....pisses me off every time, lol.

but yeah, like gurall said, the shock lands from ravinca are friggin epic, and so is bob. and they definitely ain't cheap.

Missed the first day of prerelease since I was gone on vacation this past week. Planning on going the second day.
Looked over the cards though, seem like there are some real good ones. Still want my Bolas. xP

Hehe, sakaboto, saw YGO cards in there and it reminded me that I've been wanting to get back into that game, as well.

Well y'see there is this unspoken rule that the guy who pays $25 and gets $100 back has the right to act like a boss the rest of the day :P
