It's because Japan is a society that is based on the collective, not the individual, where age and position dominates the work force, and where you cannot easily get out of work obligations. The husband probably doesn't want to ignore her, but is pressured by his boss and cannot say no. Otherwise he'd be considered rude and possibly fired because the boss didn't have his coffee that morning.

It's unfortunate, but cheating and declining birthrates are very normal in Japan, from what I understand.

Going from friendly neighbors, to hooking up together with the reason being both about sex as well as the deeper connection stuff, and by the end what we though was a one off night of passion/relief turns out not to be the case with Kanako going to Tooru's with the intent of sex and continuing their cheating relationship.
If we get a sequel I bet it would be spicy lol.

For a cheating chapter, this one is as close to "vanilla"
as it can possibly get. Tooru & Kanako are clearly very
comfortable together, so it's easy to accept their illicit
relationship.

I generally prefer the wicked wife (or wives) scenario,
but this warm-hearted story is a nice change of pace.

(I admire Kanako's composure. She doesn't overreact
when she finds Tooru in the bath. That might be a bit
of foreshadowing, too. It suggests she doesn't really
mind being seen naked by Tooru, because she has
developed a deep affection for him.)
