A kind of Motemote idea...
0
So, a while back I was talking about an idea I was working on for the next Motemote contest. Here's what I've got so far. Like I said its just a concept I've been toying around with. I see some areas where there could be improvements made, but I thought I should throw it out there to see what you guys have to say. There's the question of how many characters could participate and a whole mess of other details that I purposely left out at this point.
Basically what I'm think of is some kind of contest that involves rating characters on certain qualities. As opposed to having battles for each round, its kind of like a battle royal and since its based on an rating system, regardless of how many people participate the ratings can be averaged to give each character a fair chance. Being that there aren't 1-on-1 battles, characters won't be subjected to harsh beatdowns and have a leveled playing field against fan favorites like that bitch Haruhi. This concept is pretty versatile, seeing as how a winner could be chosen after the rating period comes to an end, or there can be multiple rounds based upon who gets the highest scores. Initially I was coming up with the idea as a kind of qualifying round for the next MoteMote contest.
The ratings could be done a number of ways. There could be a poll where the options are the scores or the users post their ratings and later on during the contest we pick one or more users to calculate the averages for each character. I personally like the posting of ratings better because that way we can sift out all the bullshit with some kind of extra rules concerning whether a rating is valid or not. I won't lie, it would take some time to go through the posts in order to weed out the crap, but in the end it would serve to cut down on the bias in the end results.

Sounds like more of a side project that what the motemote battles were for, which just seemed like rampant fanboy/girl-ism.

Well I can't say I love or hate the idea but I think doing something is better than doing nothing and it's not a bad idea. Anyway we'd probably want people who read the forum a lot to do validity checking since they'll be reading the posts anyway (meaning I'm volunteering assuming I'm not the only person who'd be doing it).

Just FYI, none of these idea's are "motemote" ideas, because motemote is a specific thing. They are ideas for polls, or competitions, or whatever. Just thought I'd clear that up a bit.

i only agree with your idea if Jacob has a new prize for the winner.
without any prize, this battle will be meaningless since we're only vote for nothing, but only for killing time.

Sometimes, it isn't always about the prizes given out. Polls add some form of entertainment to the forum, which need not necessarily be full of words and replies by themselves.
In addition, voting allows one to see the opinions of other members.

yes. voting for fun isnt bad either. i already suggest to make another new motemote battle.
giving prize for the winner is the way to attract more peoples to vote for motemote battle.
i dont know if people still enjoying to vote without a prize.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the prize idea. I mean its a pretty good idea, but its not really necessary to draw in voters. Anyway, the prizes were only for the people that were around before the contest who were able to fill out the brackets. So, unless those people were having friends join to vote in order to help them win, I don't really see it having much bearing on the contest.
I really saw the MoteMote battles as a way for us all to celebrate our love for the women of anime, even though a lot of them weren't so much women as they were girls.
I think that while my idea still maintains the Motemote theme, it also gives more leeway in regard to the true appreciation of the actual characters. As displayed by the dissatisfaction with the outcomes of the battles, its obvious that in the end, the original format for the contest left openings for questionable results.

Are you suggesting that all characters go at it at once? I don't know about you, but the logistics in creating something that'll achieve a battle royale ratings war is going to be crazy. The only way to implement something like that would be to redesign the entire "Battle!" page with profile pics of each girl and rating categories, and do away with the poll system. Problem is, there are so many girls to compare against, it might be better to provide a masterlist of all the girls competing, and then creating blocks to limit the number of comparisons made. One week a block before moving onto the next block. Then once all of the blocks are done, tally up the ratings score and we get our winner in each respective qualifying category.
Sounds and looks complicated, but not a bad idea. I propose a best couple motevote battle, but whatev. Got any ideas on the categories for rating the contestants?

Actually its pretty simple, a little time consuming, but simple. There aren't any comparisons, per se. That's what kind of messed the last MoteMote contest up, there was too much emphasis on comparing the characters as opposed to individual evaluation.
Here's a rough layout for the early stages of the contest I'm playing around with:
Selection Process:

Another idea is to just have it as an ongoing thing. There will be an open forum where people can submit characters. A master list of characters who have been added, along with their overall ratings will be provided. The overall ratings can either be included along with the master list, or in a separate post. However, in order to have more accurate standings, the characters won't be eligible for a spot in the rankings until they get a set amount of ratings.

I like the idea of making seperate competitions based on era, then mixing them all together in the end. In other words have one competition for everything up to say 1995 or something, another for 1995-2000, etc. etc. Art styles are so different in each era, and so many current characters are almost exact copies of previous prototypes that it seems kind of strange to have characters from Ranma or whatever going against current era ones.
Either that or run it like Saimoe, where you do it once a year based on characters from every show that came out in the previous year.

I'll get back to this because I think your idea is more complicated than I thought.
edit: Back.
For the selection process, I can't suggest anything better except that that's going to take a helluva time to sort through and tally the responses.
As for the actual contest, each contestant having their own thread is, well, cumbersome and space consuming. I'm thinking that maybe it would be better to implement a general ratings wars to weed out the girls who don't pass a certain standard, and then maybe 8-20 threads each dedicated to one girl with more categories to rate on. People are lazy and don't want to go back to previous pages just because their favorite girl is all the way back there.
