Does anyone know anything about Windows Media Player?

Every AVI file I try to play can't be read for some reason but they used to work before. I've already downgraded the player and then reinstalled it but it didn't do anything and I've run out of ideas. If you could help me in any way I would be really grateful. Thanks.

I recommend downloading a Codec pack [like CCCP] and using the players supplied (or sticking to WMP, as it should use the supplied DIVX, etc codecs.)
I can definitely recommend against using WMP for anything, as it is a resource hog, and utterly dodgy.

well, CCCP is not always the answer, in my case CCCP is not a gift from god but a kick from the devil xD no matter what I do CCCP always screws up and I'm unable to play video files.
but I do have a way to play the video files with just normal codecs, so no packs. I've zipped and uploaded the ones I use here: http://www.mediafire.com/?6tcbyg1ec24
if you want to know a bit more you could read this what I wrote about the codecs I use http://hi-no-ka.blogspot.com/2007/11/sensei-kuns-codec-packs.html
and I suggest you install VLC player. VLC has built-in codecs that don't interfere with the rest of your desktop, if you can't play a file in VLC it's most likely to be a corrupted file.

I think that it's worth mentioning that if you have any other codec packs installed, you'll need to uninstall them all. Then you can install CCCP and it shouldn't cause you any problems. This is something stated by most codec packs, but I said it just in case.

no problem ^_^
but I do need to mention 1 problem with VLC, it can't really handle styled softsubs, they'll appear as standard plain subs... so watch out with for example .mkv files with styled softsubs.
well, it's not really a problem, but some people can make such a big deal out of this xD
