Does it always take so long for orders to be fulfilled?

I placed an order for 5 books that are in stock over a week ago, and there has been no movement. It's nice that you get the digital copies right away, but this seems to be a pervasive Fakku problem no one talks about. I had forgotten, but an order I placed on "in stock" items earlier this year (a book and figure) took over a month to fulfill.
I know this isn't Amazon, but I can't be the only one a bit aggravated. If items are in stock, I'd expect them to be mailed in a couple days. If they aren't already in stock, then maybe indicate that when you place your order? And better still, don't charge people until the items are actually ready to be shipped?
