Questions about the current bandwidth dillema.
0
I have a number of questions about the recent problems and the need for more donations.
1. ?Exceeding your bandwidth means you will be charged for the
overage at the end of this billing cycle.? At what point in the ?billing cycle? is Fakku in?
2. How much will more bandwidth cost per month and how soon will it needed?
From what I?ve read it costs $15.00 for another 1000GB of bandwidth (this is based on the build your own server info so I could be wrong). I just donated another $10 which I think should at least extend the website?s life for a week or two at least.

I'm wondering about the cost as well.
The only cost i know is the yearly billing cost.
Then again, I never host a server myself so I'm not too sure. =/

1. ?Exceeding your bandwidth means you will be charged for the

The billing cycle ends 6 days from today. There are about 200Gigs left in this cycle and at our current rate of about 90Gigs a day we will either exceed it this month or the next. This is the first time we have come close to the bandwidth maximum.
2. How much will more bandwidth cost per month and how soon will it needed?
The cost hopefully won't exceed a $20 a month addition to the current hosting cost of around $107. But obviously we will require more monthly bandwidth as time goes on.
The other option is to increase the overall server cost and get unmetered bandwidth which doesn't have a maximum monthly allocation, but rather a maximum amount that can be transfered at one time. For example if we had 10mps unmetered there could only be a maximum of 10mpbs being downloaded at one time, split among everyone downloading. Usually there around 200 downloads at once.
This is a good substitute, but it is more expensive. Now this brings up the other issue that donations pay for the monthly hosting costs as well since we don't run ads. So if we did something like that we would have to ask for more donations. I honestly think our donators are the greatest contributors to the site, more than myself, and I hate asking them for more. :(

I'll retype this here in case anyone missed in in the front page comments:
unlogged users cant download, and in fact shouldn't be able to enter anything but main, forums and contribute. we'll still lose bandwith for visitors but thats all part of being on the net.
logged in registered users can download but are limited in either ammount or frequency, and also being able to download one file at a time.
Then also add requirements for being an unlimited downloads... ie donation or paying... i'm biased cause i do donate, but its part of what keeps this open to others so i'll be stingy, also this can be offset by either being a heavy seeder or participating in running fakku, ie admins and moderators, other ppl deemed worthy, rep points

As a donator you should have privileges, there is no doubt about that. I think anyone who contributes to the site in a positive way or donates should have privileges. However I don't like restricting content to users, but I like giving befits to those who deserve them.
So it is a bit of a dilemma, and I invite you and everyone else to help come up with some ideas. But if bandwidth continues to be a problem I will restrict the site to registered users.
P.S. I have seen your sketchbook, awesome work!

Just put in a bit extra from my side. Hopefully that'll help.
Hmm.. about $130 per months. That's some heavy load for one person to take.
On the bandwith problem. Limiting it to registered user would help a bit.
How heavy is the video file download? The files are huge and you can't host a lot without killing the bandwith.
Things like put them on rapidshare or something might help.
Those with Static IP might hate this setup thought. =/

i agree on that one, host the video's externally, thats one way to save some bandwith. (could u give some detailed statistics on the bandwith-usage of the video's/doujins(incl manga's))

All videos and games are hosted externally, so there's no worries there. It's mainly the sheer amount of people that download 5-15mb files in done day is killer.

You really should invest in about 10,000 GB Bandwidth, hell Mangatraders.com which just like you host <150 mb zips has that and they still need to limit their usage. Again they have alot more. But all in all you guys are really popular and I can forsee this happening

What I've seen another site done is to have a points system set up to download. Each download would be like 2 points and new registered users get 100 points default I think. You could get points by playing the arcade games or by posting in the forums and making threads. Donaters would be able to download without using points up and they even got a secret forum for direct downloads of other items.
Unfortunatly, the site eventually died out after half a year.
Site use to be teamskn then it fell into disuses and mergered with Anikel.com
I think the server costs were also a bit past $100 per month too at that time.

I've seen that kind of setup before, but our ultimate goal here is to have a hassle-free system for everyone. You don't need any kind of account to download anything. Just easy, you know?

Eventually, that hassle free download will become bad as the site grows and more and more people will come here to download and leave.
It always happens to other sites I've been to that eventually died out. You start out with free unhassled downloads relying on donators. After a few months, about 1-4, you start having to force registered users and start restricting downloads, start putting in ads or some sort system to slow people down. But bandwidth costs still increase and you start relying on the donators more and more along with the ads until eventually you get merged with something or, lose intrest and stop updating, or just die.

Well at the moment we seem to have things worked out, and I can see how things could end up that way. Except for the fact that we will never have ads.
And if you think of it this way... if ~1.5% of the total REGISTERED populace donates $1 per month, that'd be more than enough to cover server costs.

Yeah it really doesn't take very much to keep a site like this online if people donate. Few dollars from everyone and we all win.
But we have been online for over 6 months now :D
