I had to learn DJing by myself. you have to learn by yourself all the type of music and know your sounds. Know your beats, know what can go with what. Know when and not to use effect. How to use them also.
It all depends on what style you want to play. I prefer to stay in Techno or Trance, since its my favorite genre.
For 4 years, I practice about 3 to 5 hours every day. Without using any computer programs. I have 2 pioneer CDJ-200 and a numark DXM06 for mixing, the basic stuff. None of the professional stuff. Thanks to my friends, i've done some stuff at their party, when you do a decent job, some people invite you to their parties and your name started to go around.
My brother use to work for Molson a beer company. He knew the 2 DJ's for the company for any event. They invited me at one of the huge parties they had over a summer, I had an 1 hour session, wasn't the greatest things, made many mistake, but for someone who was doing is first run into a real public, without knowing anything, I did a pretty good job, atlest that's what they tell me.
Keep practicing, be the first to know whats hot, what was hot, what will be hot, that's a key part in the DJ world. Everyone makes mistakes, even pro's. Shit happen, you won't die from it.
