English Dubs Like or Dislike

I have a huge problem whenever Anime is dubbed into english, it sucks monkey nuts. They always give the female a high pitched whiney voice (like most girls, score +1 for sexism) but in the japanese version it doesn't sound so crappy. Then for guys in Japanese the sound like dope shit mutha fuckers, in english it sounds like someone chopped off one nut and kicked the other one reapetedly.

Well I hate english dubbing, how about you?

lol for me it purely depends on who dubs it some times its so bad i carnt watch

one example for this although kinda strange is the english dubbed bible black lawl i couldnt listen to it

but if the dub is good it makes things easyer as u dont have to look at the screen as much

I'm indifferent to it myself. Some stuff I watch dubbed other stuff subbed. I don't really care so long as the ADR work is solid and the translations/pronunciations remain clean (See comments regarding the pronunciation of the world chakra.) But then again I seem to exert more patience with media than most people I come in contact with it seems.

Hold that thought for just a second and check out this thread:

And not all Dubs are bad. Shuffle! is so much better dubbed in my opinion (since some of the girls sound more sexy and less annoying - but japanese still sounds great). Also School Rumble did a great job, I really liked Tenma still sounding dorky and Harima was great albeit different. Darker than Black was nicely done as well and Black Lagoon was decent. Every series is different because it depends if the company thinks good dubbs will increase sales or if the people who are going to buy it are going to buy it regardless of dubbing.

Course sometimes they just screw it up because they can't match that person's personality in a different language.

Thank you sir. I can think of a few other dubs that were surprisingly well, and/or sounded a little more natural in English. I think in recent years dubbing as started to increase in quality. Well at least with some studios/projects.

The dub for Cowboy Bebop is a lot better than the Japanese version. Lol.

But I agree... Usually, it sucks.

But... How about on the other side...?
Japanese animes that try to use English? That's some terrible crap right there. XD

Anime=Japanese
Dubs=English
English is not Japanese.

I really rarely watch duubed anime anymore. Most of the time it just doesn't feel right...

It all depends of preference, if you don't like looking at subs while watching you favorite anime watch dub, i don't like dub at all, on some points in anime theres not enough emotion behind the voice actor to really make certain scenes stand out or its just misplaced.

The only animes i ever watched dubbed were
Tenchi
Rurouni kenshin
G Gundam
DBZ and GT
Yu Yu Hakusho, etc.

Only because i grew up with them dubbed

Not all anime recorded in dubs are bad. For instance DBZ, it's VA was the same one who did Goku when he was little. It was suppose to capture Goku's innocence but to me it made Goku sound like a pussy. The English dub DBZ is way more manlier compared to the orginal DBZ.

Original DBZ

Dubbed DBZ

Another dub I found decent was Eureka 7, I switched back and forth from JP w/ subs or dubs while watching my Eureka 7 dvd collection. I found the dub and original okay.

I hate dubs most of the time. I was so happy when I finally got the funimation channel, but I hardly watch it because of all the crappy dubbed anime that gets shown. Such a pity.

I do hate em. Not nice to the ears.

Dubbing removes the true intention and meaning in a work... Subtitles are far better.

Well if you take examples like School Rumble, puns that only make sense in japanese would be completely lost subbed. So during dubbing, the dialogue was changed to get the joke across and keep the feel of the scene but word it in a way that was understandable when a straight translation wouldn't of made sense.

Thats why the conversation flows more naturally in School Rumble and you hear them say things that obviously were not in the original dialogue like "Word" or "Sup Dudes" or jokes like "Miso Hungry for Miso soup!" because a subbed translation wouldn't be able to give the true meaning or feel or the scene like a good voice actor could.

Btw I feel like a hypocrite for posting in this thread when I posted a link to another one with the exact same subject. Lets all go post in that one for now on lol.

Somehow in the English dubs everyone always seems to have the same arrogant tone, no matter the situation. Never had a problem with German dubs, though. But I still prefer subs.

i hate dubs! i watch alot of subbed anime and thats the only reason i can speak and understand basic japanese. that and when i found out naruto's voice in the english anime was done by some 40 year old fat white lady who always said " believe it!" it all went downhill from there.

truth.

- i hate them.
- sometimes the mood is not there
- and sometimes depend on the seiyu]
- I hate when they dubbed the super cute voice of some seiyu, they really spoiled the mood

totally hate dubs.

There are only few nice dubs mainly dragon ball and FMA

Dubs are alright... what I've found is that whichever version I watch first, I would seem to have developed a preference for. The only exception to this is Baccano. Saw it in sub first and then dub... still prefer the dub!

It really depends on the dub. There are some dubs I've watched that I can't even imagine watching it in Japanese, and vice-versa. It also depends heavily on the show.

In general, I don't mind them, as long as they're well done.
