I have surge protectors on everything but my toaster. Seriously, I have a $300+ Kitchen-Aid commercial mixer and it has one.My big TV has one. In fact my desktop has, one at the outlet, one built into the UPS and yet another on the power distribution outlets. My laptop has one. If you think about it What would it cost you to replace any of them out of your pocket?
We have been hit 4 times this year, So far I have lost the toaster.
Surge protectors cost maybe 7 or 9 bucks for individual ones. The multi-outlet ones under 20. Prime and APC have a guarantee that if you are properly wired (Grounded outlets etc and you have to register the unit and components for it to apply) and you lose a component due to lightning or a surge, They will reimburse you up to 10 grand.Cheap insurance if you ask me.
EDIT added a comma and "or a surge"

I don't think EMP is created by a lightning bolt. What you probably experienced was a power surge or a transformer being blown out in your neighborhood's electrical system. The fact that your laptop shut down when this happened instead of frying to a blue smoky crisp is impressive. Since most people plug in their laptops at home if it suddenly turned off it might be due to the charger or laptop power sources power surge fail safe that instantly disconnects [through a temporary circuit melting] that thus cuts all power to the computer to keep it from frying as a power surge could easily pump several thousands of volts into your hard drive more than enough to turn it into a crispy fried pork chop. Higher end power strips have this built in too. So if other stuff turned off for a while it might have been due to that as well.
