L2 and 3

So I was on the show "I Wish to Pimp my Ride, Please" when I asked the people there what the gears L2 and 3 are for. They were baffled.

well since your talking about cars I assume its an option to use one of the lower gears in a transmission. You pretty much use these when the road surface is slick or otherwise hard to traverse.
L2 I guess would be the 2nd and 3 the 3rd but Im not too sure on that.

lol ok..... WikiAnswers, while not the most trustworthy, is pretty much correct here.
Mainly though you worry about switching gears when mountain biking or using an ATV. When youre in a car, Im not too sure on this, but you switch to lower gears when hauling really heavy stuff or off-roading in an SUV, truck, or something like that.
Why am I still doing this? xD

"the 3 mean driving in the third gear, this would be used if you are driving on adverse ground conditions, ie. snow, mud, off road up a hill. this keeps your car in a lower gear so you have better control over the vehicle.
L is for low gear. normally you will never have to use this setting. this setting keeps the vehicle in your lowest gear (1st) the only time you might need to use this is if your vehicle is stuck or you are using your vehicle to put a boat into water. the lower gear gives the vehicle more pulling power at the sacrifice of speed. you will only want to do this if your vehicle is stuck in deep mud or sand that you are barely not able to get out of. this does not always work but it helps. using the low setting to launch a boat works well on a ramp to prevent slipping and give the vehicle an even moving speed for better control.
take you car out sometime in a parking lot and switch through the settings. you wont notice a big difference between 3rd and drive but it should seem a little sluggish. when you put it into low you will see what i mean about the slower speeds. have fun just don't red line your vehicle and you will be fine."
